900 years is a long time, but this is how long St Nicolas church in Newbury has been the spritual hub of the town. Little remains now of the original Norman church, which was replaced in the 16th century. The tower shows fine exterior details with the two arched gateways built by Fuller White in 1770, representing the earlist examples of the Gothic Revival style in Berkshire. Many other features are worth exploring. Located centrally in Newbury by the canal and Newbury Lock, the church is an imposing structure and reminder of the cultural and historic legacy of the town. It is actively supported by the church going community and also hosts regular performances by renowned Newbury Choral Society and the Newbury Symphony Orchestra. Well worth a visit if in the area.
