late night 10″ pizza + 2 toppings + 1 can + the best employees = 2.50 quid. = AWESOME.

1. Evokes the romance and intrigue of one of Europe’s most picturesque cities. 2. Sells cheese and tomato pizza for £1.50. Venice Pizza does one of these two things. The answer may surprise you, but probably won’t. This little takeaway had a lot to live up to being, as it is, on the same parade as local favourite pizza dispensary Happy Days. Cannily it neatly sidesteps any arguments about whether or not it can live up to, or surpass, its competition by completely undercutting every other kebab, pizza and fried chicken shop in the local area. Chicken burger meal for £2.50? Done. Two donner kebabs, two chips and two drinks for £7.50? Sorted. Greasy, meaty pizza for under £3? Abso-flippin’-lutoley. They don’t taste as good as the examples from the other Fallowfield takeway alumnus but who cares at these prices! Last time I walked past Happy Days one of the staff was sticking a poster in the window for £1.50 cheese and tomato pizza. He looked very unhappy. Looks like it’s going to be a year of tightening belts for purveyors of fast food and a tightening of waistbands for the students of Fallowfield.

Venice Pizza is a relatively new take-away restaurant in an area with an abundance of established take-away places. Its therefore got to be something special if its going to be a success, and whilst Venice Pizza is not at all bad, it doesn’t have what it takes to usurp the superb take-aways of Fallowfield. The speciality is, well, Pizza. For me the best is the margarita because the toppings are not as good here as elsewhere, whereas the bases, cheese and tomato can compete. Also, its incredibly cheap, at £2.50 for a fat off pizza.

The name may suggest some kind of Italian slant maybe, or possibly an emphasis on pizzas, but you’d be wrong on both counts. Really, it’s just another takeaway. It does your standard Manchester takeaway fare: kebabs, burgers and pizzas. So far, so so. But before you turn away in disgust, my friend, I have some good news! One thing it does which I do approve of is a very good deal where you get a 10″ pizza, your choice of two toppings, and a can, all for £2.50. Now that is good. Of course, the pizza is no better than you would get elsewhere, but consider for a moment, if you would, that the standard price you will find around Manchester takeaways, and Fallowfield especially, is a 10″ Margherita for £2. Adding two extra toppings and a can for 50p is a great deal in my book. The pizza may not be fantastic but it does the job, so if you’re hungry and just passing by… why the hell not?
