Yes, I know. Subway is Subway right? Well… yes. You’re not going to find anything earth shattering here, and there’s nothing particularly special about *this* Subway over any of the others, but this is one of my favourite Subways and I’m going to tell you why. I’m assuming that you’re already familiar with what Subway has to offer, if you aren’t, they offer what I can only describe as ‘long’ sandwiches with what’s actually quite a good array of fillings, as well as salad boxes. First of all, this one is actually pretty handy. It’s pretty close to Peters Square and Spinningfields and is a 50⁄50 toss up for Albert Square depending which end you’re at(there are a lot of subways in Manchester, but that’s for another day). Secondly, the staff in here are alway busy, so they’ve got good at getting you out of the way quick. Now this can be somthing of a mixed blessing. On one hand you get your food quick, on the other, they’re not always as on top of things as they could be. I’m not expecting an artisan salad or sandwich at all, but it would be nice if all the filling was on the sandwich. Thirdly, because the turnover is quite high, the veggies seem to be a bit fresher than other Subways that I’ve beeen to where the salad can end up a bit limp and soggy. This comes in handy because I’ve recently gotten into their salads(which you should try — they’re actually pretty good). Fourthly/Lastly, they have a pretty good seating area in the back, which is usually kept nice and clean, is quiet and means that you can escape the bustle and stress of office life(other types of life are available) for a while. So, where am I going with this? Subway is a safe bet if you want to know what you’re going to get, and you could do worse than go to this one, especially if you want a salad.

This Subway was perfect for grabbing food after a night out. Open late, good service… no complaints. Well, there is one — all Subways on Oxford Road do not participate in any of the ongoing specials(e.g. £2 subs). Damn unis.

Do you guys like Subway? Because I love it, and most of the time, when I fancy a sandwich and I pop into Subway, I see that no one is at the queue, and next door, where Greggs is, everybody is dying to get something. Well, I know it’s not as fresh as they claim to be. But I love the fact that I can actually personalize my sandwich. As silly as it sounds, I really don’t like all the things ready made. Few exceptions, like prêt for instance. But if I like what they put in my sandwich, I might not like the bread, if everything it is fine, I find some mayo in it, bleah. With Sub, I can get what I really fancy. What sauce I want, the cheese I like and so on. The prices are up tho, for what Sub offers. I mean, I find it a bit ridiculous to pay nearly a fiver for a big sandwich that won’t even fill me for the day, and it’s not as fresh as the prêt one.

Another Subway on your plate, means more bread, sauces, meat and salad. For a baguette service, they’re pretty great and popular, but one might find some sort of monotony in this chain which is its biggest devil. Coming back to our review of this Subway on Peter Street, if you’re on your way to Amc cinemas and thinking of that growling tummy you got there, make a stop and buy yourself the sub of the day which is always pretty great for just £2.20!(It used to be £1.99!) Throw in some cookies and a drink and you’ve saved £7 on the film food inside! Woo-hoo! The subway is great and i love their sugar donuts!

Subway is for people with two separate interests. In order to like Subway you must have an interest in huge sandwiches, and an interest in feeling groggy and ill for a couple of hours after lunch. The previous sums up the Subway experience concisely and accurately. I shall now pat myself on the back, and mention a few more detailed points, for those who don’t know whether they fit into this category or not. Subway has got a huge selection of sandwiches. I need not list them, because they all taste the same. This is because they all come with a sauce on. You have a choice of sauce. These sauces all taste the same too. So you enter the shop and queue. When you get to the front the creation of your sandwich begins. You carefully select the produce you require to be included in your sandwich. You then choose salads are additional materials to be inserted. You then choose a sauce, which is added, ruling the time spent choosing the previous items completely void. Next time just ask for some random ingredients with a sauce, and I bet you can’t tell the difference. There are a few exception to this, such as the meatball sub, which comes in its own sauce, making it different, but probably not nicer. If you like salty mayonnaise, and I do, then Subway is for you.

Uh… the snow is making reviewing HARD. Still, there’s nothing wrong with letting a new Mancunian or a visitor to the city know about the classic chain restaurants we have here and which spots are best. I like Subway, and not just because it reminds me of that hilarious episode of South Park where Subway’s spokesperson and weight-loss achiever extraordinaire Jared Fogle visits the town. It’s a controversial one, but if you have a slightly wicked sense of humour you’ll love it. Anyway, back to Subway, and when these bright green beacons of sandwichy goodness hit our streets years ago few of us realised that the company had actually been in operation since 1965 in the US. Typical, they get all the cool food first. I just really love the way you can be completely OCD about what goes in your sandwich, and your ‘sandwich artist’ must accept that. Speaking of which I’ve lost count of the amount of friends of mine who were once ‘sandwich artists’, it was a really popular place to work at one point. Speaking of being OCD, you can’t fault Subway for the options available. They’ve made a real effort, especially for veggies, and the veggie patty you can get is a complete favourite of mine, along with honey mustard dressing and salad, olives, pickles, NO onions and bell peppers on honey oat bread. The choice of breads is equally good, from your plain options to herby, wholemeal, oaty, cheesy and soforth. So it’s never going to be Merv’s, but it’s great for a quick fix. I particularly like the Peter Street location as it’s a little out of the way, but easy to get to behind Deansgate. It also happens to be a short walk from my apartment too which is never a bad thing when you’ve got a hangover. I find it’s not as crowded and hectic as the other branches in Manchester. And did you know that rather like the kosher Subways which opened in America, we have two Halal outlets in Manchester? That’s right, due to the high Asian populations in Levenshulme and Cheetham Hill, those Subways serve meat in accordance with Muslim dietary rules. So you can’t argue that Subway isn’t inclusive. It bends over backwards so that everyone can join in and say, ‘We’ve got a sub for that.’ Why did the UK and Ireland get stuck with this specific dumb slogan, dearie me.
