I called in Starbucks to grab a coffee after visiting The Christie Hospital, with it being the nearest store to the hospital, if you exclude the café inside Christie which serves Starbucks Coffee, but still isn’t like a real store with some drinks etc, so basically is the standard hospital café, but back to this particular Starbucks store in Fallowfield. This is quite a nice store, it is opposite Sainsbury’s so it can be relatively easy to grab parking, for a central location, with the end of the Sainsbury’s store where the café is, providing access to get to Starbucks, just by crossing a road. This store is quite a nice one, with a good selection of merchandise with Starbucks mugs from London, Manchester and England, and a small selection of the Christmas mugs. I opted for a Manchester mug for £7.50, as I like to collect the«places» mugs as they are quite nice. The barista seemed helpful, and I managed to sort out a free drink with it, which after reducing the cost of my Grande Gingerbread latte, meant the cup effectively cost £3.65, which is a great price. My latte was quite nice and the service from the baristas was very good, and they also helped wrap up my mug nicely, as I guess they were out of boxes. This store is a nice Starbucks store, in a good location and the staff are great, they even have gluten free brownies in a separate cake container from the gluten ones, which means no risk of cross-contamination, which means you don’t have to ask for one pre-wrapped! This is a great Starbucks store and in a way, a role-model for many other stores on drink quality, customer service and other minor roles such as with the merchandise selection and gluten free brownie!

It’s a Starbucks, so no surprises there. But staff are friendly, so that makes this place quality.

Personally I’m not a fan of Starbucks but this morning I really needed a bit of a pick me up and this was the nearest place. The coffee is always too milky for my liking and KFC could use the cups for their 24 piece bucket they are that big. I wouldn’t recommend Starbucks to anyone but if you are in a squeeze and really, really, really really need a coffee and there is nowhere else to go then go to your nearest Starbucks.

Okay, I shan’t beat about the bush. Yes, I’m always banging on about how much I love my independents, but living round the corner from this bad boy and it being one of perhaps the only three places in Fallowfield open before 11am(the other being a mini Tesco 7 – 11 and a McDonalds… yay, choice!) means that if I’m in need of a caffeine fix or a juice boost, I’m gonna be found here. And if you do come early in the morning and it ain’t crammed with the usual walk-of-shamers, man, as Starbuckses go this ain’t a bad option at all. It’s got the requisite sofas and chairs that eat you, the sturdier wooden furniture… but it’s also got a bookswap bookcase. HELLO! I love stuff like that. My marvelling at it got the lovely barista chatting to me about it. She was a very sweet girl indeed, and told me people could take and leave books as they please. Add to that the fact that you can probably set up shop here with your laptop for hours on end and you could do worse in Studentville. I don’t mind the fact that there’s a Bucks here. I’m somewhat fascinated by Seattle so I’ll welcome their seemingly endless green and white imports with glee. If it gets me bright-eyed and bushy tailed in the morning, *and* carries the promise of cakes and pancakes, I shan’t complain!

Starbucks is as Starbucks does. And this is not different to any other Starbucks. And if you don’t know what Starbucks is by now, you must be from another planet and obviously require a formal induction into the world and its ways. Starbucks is probably my favourite of all the coffee moguls for three reasons. One: they have the best mugs. Two: their frappucinos aren’t matched anywhere else. Three: they allow you to flavour your own coffee with powder-shakers of vanilla, nutmeg and chocolate. Nice. This Starbucks is pretty much the same as all the others but it is my go-to place for coffee in Fallowfield. The free wi-fi and central-studentville location ensure a permanent scattering of students armed with laptops. There is only one large bench-table which I like to claim of an early morning to spread out my newspaper next to my mug. The rest of the seating is hard-backed-hard-seated wooden chairs, save for a few squidgy chairs/benches towards the back, where you will also find a toilet. It does the job, I’m happy.

Well that’s all very true, and on the one hand a Starbucks is a Starbucks. But this Starbucks is doing a cool new thing, which for all I know all Starbucks may be doing, but i’m going to tell you about it anyway. Have you ever had broblems walking the instant coffe /fresh coffee divide? Well i have. Fresh coffee is better, i guess thats undisputed by everyone except my auntie. But instant coffee is faster isnt it? Its, well, instant. So there are pros and cons. And Starbucks have solved the decision making problem. They now sell their own special instant coffee sachets, which make coffee in seconds, but literally tastes like(well almost like) fresh coffee. They come in packs of 3 or 12, and are on a promotional deal at the moment. They even come in different flavours, such as decaf(blurgh).

Obviously all Starbucks are similar and they pretty much serve the same selection of goods but I always find this branch particularly cosy and relaxing. It must just be it’s proximity to my flat and the fact that it always contains students catching up or doing a bit of work. I loved revising for exams in here because you do far more work than you’d imagine and you don’t feel cut off from society — stuck in your room or in the library. Finances take a bit of a hit though… There’s plenty of seating — hard chairs at the front and more comfortable sofas at the back but the prize seat is the one on the right as you walk in, by the window so you can people watch. If doing work, try to grab the bench on the left so you can spread out and not worry about lack of space. The staff — I’m always shocked they don’t recognise me when I go in because I’m such a regular but hey I’ll live with it — are friendly and always get the orders right, no problems. The marmite and cheese panini is fab-u-lous on a hangover. As a side entertainment, there’s usually an old man in there in the morning who insists on waving at everyone and sometimes coming over for a chat. Little bit of fun on a morning, why not.
