One of my favourite bars to go to at the end of the evening. Wahl Bar is owned by the same people who own the gas lamp in town. The vibe is relaxed and friendly and the bar is quite modern with a striped back wooden look. The cocktails here are amazing and as it’s in Fallowfield’s student area cheap. I paid £3.50 for an amertto sour and £4.00 for an apple martini both of which were better than the £10 cocktails I had at Manchester House a few weeks ago. Also up to 9pm you can get 2 cocktails for £5. They also have a great selection of craft beers if that’s more your thing. Wahl Bar is well worth visiting if you are on your way into town.

Currently my No. 1 spot to drink in Fallowfield. Wahlbar leads away from the surrounding student-grunge and brings a little class to this nook of Manchester. The cocktails here are delicious and the range of beers and ales outstanding. You will certainly be spoilt for choice. Plus, despite the more upmarket feel, the prices are still extremely competitive; pints starting from £2.50 and cocktails from £3.50. There is also an eclectic food menu to rival those of Trof and Font, the most comparable bars in the area. In fact, think of Wahlbar as Trof without the pretention and with more comfortable seating.

Pre-moving day, the boyf and I wandered down to Wahlbar to check out the new kid on the block of the Fallowfield drinking scene. The décor is lovely, nice outside seating(though who knows how much use they’ll ever get out of that!), and a nice inclusion of local artwork/photography on the walls. As Natasha T. suggests, this really does give you a sense of the Northern Quarter but in the South; wood, light colours, lots of people who know everyone and everything. [note: I understand that sounds completely scoffing, but I do sometimes have a bit of an issue with the hipster stylings of many NQ bars, and the music at Wahlbar is definitley a reflection of what I don’t enjoy in the NQ.] The pricing is great here and, I don’t quite know how to put this, but I think Font might have a rivalry with Wahlbar for the custom of anyone living south of Egerton Road — Wahlbar is in a more ‘comfortable’ walking distance and the quality of the drinks are hugely competitive. I drank a raspberry sherbet, which tasted EXACTLY like refreshers(amazing) and a polish passion, or something along those lines, which was equally delicious; fruity and cold, it hit the spot correctly. The range of beers was enough to make Joshua B’s eyes boggle, meaning he was a happy camper. So, Wahlbar, keep up the good work. But could you put some Creedence or Fleetwood Mac on? I’m not so much into obscure beats and no words.

Fancy a little bit of the Northern Quarter but can’t bring yourself to make that trip into the town centre? Worry thee not, you can now experience that same atmosphere in Fallowfield! It couldn’t be a more stark contrast to its unpopular predecessor: Bar 43. Now…I know your instant reaction is probably to scoff at these bold words of mine, most likely followed by sheer indignation. But I promise you, it is true. Wahlbar, at least for now(as let’s face it who knows how long it will be before the student booze train takes over) is one of the more refined drinking establishments of Manchester’s student capital, promising good music(for all you alternative folks out there) good beer, and good cocktails. Speaking of the beer, Wahlbar is another one of those establishments with its own lager, which is actually pretty damn tastey, and certainly not to be sniffed at, for only £2.50 a pint. This makes me a very happy girl indeed. And yes, girls do drink pints too you know. Cocktails are only £3 as well, which means, my lovelies, that not only are we getting a little slice of the Northern Quarter in a much more convenient location, but also for a fraction of the price. Hurrah! On a practical note: credit cards are accepted here but there is a £5 minimum spend, just so you know. It’s a lovely place to congregate when the sun occasionally decides to grace Manchester with its presence, but for the rest of the time, when it’s raining, the ambience of the interior will do just fine. The bar is split into two levels, most of the time it’s just the top bar that is open, and it’s really intimate here, I like it a lot. I imagine that the downstairs bar opens when it gets rather busy at weekends. I reckon there might even be a bit of potential for dancing and boogie-woogie down there too…
