Back in my first year, when I was young and impetuous, I would often fall back to takeaways for sustenance. It was a decision born of impatience and laziness, but did give me reason to explore numerous places around Manchester. Shaygan was one of them. It was just around the corner of the university hall I lived in, and so was an easy pick when the need arose. From first appearances, both outside and in, there seems to be nothing particularly special about it, but appearances can often be deceiving. Where Shaygan won me over was in the general atmosphere. Whether it’s the TV playing Bollywood classics, or the one incomprehensible guy behind the counter, I’m not sure. All I do know is that I always felt strangely at home here. It helped that I always found the food good, whether it was burger, kebab or pizza, as each seemed to have a distinctive taste. Of course, it is also possible they are now all seasoned with nostalgia and I am misremembering, but I certainly hope not. The prices never hurt either, so it’s a place I can heartily recommend, especially to those living nearby. The one bad thing? It doesn’t open that late, so once it gets past 12, you’re looking at Raja’s across the road from it, or the curry mile.
