They ran out of beer. On a FRIDAY. AT18:00! All they had left were ciders. They didn’t adjust prices accordingly. Harry’s bar is a good joint if you just want a cheap beer and a game of pool, but it’s going to be lacking in environment. Sometimes it’s busy, most of the time it sits there empty. Still, with its proximity to northern campus, it’s a good destination for those nearby. Also — please get rid of those annoying music commercials that play seemingly every 5 minutes!

Drinks? Check. Food? Occasionally. People? Occasionally. Personality? Harry’s Bar really does mean well. It is the University of Manchester’s North Campus Student Union Bar. Sounds a bit convoluted, eh? It is a well equipped, comfortable bar, complete with pool table and touch screen games. It is very central in the city, and is flanked by four student halls of residence. It serves most drinks at good student prices, and occasionally serves food. So why is it so empty? Whenever I have been in Harry’s Bar, it has been very low on the ground in numbers. Even when an event is taking place at the Underground, a performance space in the same building, it doesn’t seem to be hugely busy. It has squishy sofas and private booths, and is fitted with modern lighting and furniture. I think that, if better advertised within the student community, Harry’s Bar would do much better for itself. It has to compete with nearby Retro Bar, Canal Street, and its bigger counterpart, in the main SU building on Oxford Road. It is a nice place to go if you need a quiet drink and a chat, and the bar staff are always very friendly, but if you are after a social drinking experience, you are not likely to find it here, that is, unless you bring the party!
