The Aubin Cinema

Gutted that this cinema got taken over and renamed. It’s selling point was that it had couples sofas, and arm chairs: felt like you could be in your living room watching a HUGE screen… Now it’s just a bog standard cinema, that is extortionately priced…

Saw a 3D film at the formerly Aubin and Wells cinema where unlike most you can get some comfy one or two seater sofas and enjoy the film. Really nice space and you can even get really cheap seats from the sides with a view that is not as good.
*NOTE…it’s now part of the Electric Cinema chain. Still as good tho!

My favourite cinema in London. Based beneath Aubin & Wills attractive store off Redchurch Street in painfully hip Shoreditch, this cine-​haven is a true one off.
It, most welcomingly, is the antithesis to your local Cineplex. An intimate viewing room featuring comfy sofas, blankets and ottomans makes for a cherished experience. This cinema is so good even a bad film could not temper your mood as you bask in the elegant bar (one of the best Margueritas I have ever had), gourmet snacks and effortlessly cool surroundings. Happily, the cool setting does not mean the venue solely shows independent films — it mixes art house into their program along with the best of the mainstream movies. Something, truly, for everyone, including a classic film every Sunday afternoon. Once you visit the Aubin it becomes unfeasible to catch a movie anywhere else in London. This is no tragedy.

If you’re a film lover you NEED to go to this place. The Aubin has a lot to offer — some good food, cocktails and… sofas with blankets. It doesn’t get much better than that! It’s a really lovely intimate setting — quite small so regardless of where you end up sitting you have a great view of the screen. Also pretty impressed with their selection of films — it’s nice to see some smaller productions every once in a while.
Tickets are a little pricey (£13) but I do think that it’s worth it if you want the convenience of total comfort and relaxation.

Is it bad that both times I have been to the Aubin I get incredibly drunk? Not because it is the only way I can stand being there, but it just seems to happen.
This never happens in Canada, mainly because you can’t buy a beer, or several beer and take it into the film with you, we also don’t have these comfy armchairs and couches that one, after a few beers may end up falling asleep on.
Aubin gets points because they sell:
1) giant bottles of peroni
2) budvar
3) Jazz corn (popcorn with cayenne pepper on it) and just regular popcorn, which is very good.
There is also a Turkish pizza place down the street, which makes for a good quick dinner before the film. Or bring it in with you (I don’t know if this is condoned behaviour, but I have done it)!
I like your style Aubin, also you have very clean washrooms and very nice staff. BRAVO.

On first approach I certain felt that I wasn’t indie or cool enough to heading to a place like this, but once inside it’s a different story! Down in the basement there’s a quaint little bar, and the one room cinema. The toilets aren’t up to much, but in a basement what do you expect!
Once seated in the most divine cinema I have laid eyes on, I didn’t want the film to end! Snuggled up on a sofa with Aubin & Wills cushions and a large blanket, there was no better way to get out of the rain. We were half an hour early, so we whiled away the time just having a chat and feeling totally chilled, so much nicer than being out at a normal cinema, with those awkward chairs that you can’t ever get comfortable on.
The snacks were a little pricey but well worth it, as watching a film at half 6 with a hungry belly was probably not my best idea having been at work all day!
When the film came to an end, I was certainly disappointed that I was going to have to leave the comfy sofa and head back out into the horrid weather! I would really recommend seeing a film here; it’s reasonably priced, and has a few film choices throughout the week. You can even chose the sofa you want online, but if sofa snuggling isn’t for you, then there are plenty of arm chairs available. With the cinema only seating up to 50 people I would definitely book online before you go.

If you want to impress a date, then this is the place to go. It’s an intimate little cinema in Shoreditch, so there are lots of places to go out afterwards. Spring for the two-​seater sofa for the ultimate experience. Feels like you’re being let in on a secret.

The place does indeed look great, the couches are comfortable, the people who work there are very friendly, the programming is good.
BUT whoever decided to put the screen 3 feet from the seating has guaranteed that I will never go back. The screen is so big and the seats so close to it that you literally can’t watch the whole movie, you have to pick just a section of the screen (hmm, I think I’ll just see what happens in the upper right corner of this film). And they’ve had the nerve to sell seats (albeit a little cheaper) that are located almost at a 90 degree angle to the screen. Ridiculous.
I’ve never seen such brain-​dead cinema architecture before. It’s a shame since it could have been a great place.

This is a wonderful intimate little cinema, I absolutely love it! Before heading in to watching your chosen film, you can choose to relax in the lounge/​bar as well as buying tea, alcohol and tid bits which you can later bring in. The seats are spacious, made of velvet, cosy, and the 2 seater sofas are the best as you get a foot rest as well as a blanket to snuggle up in! The film line-​up is planned only 4 weeks in advance with a certain film playing for a maximum of a week and a half 2 weeks (depending on whether it is a box office hit flick), so be sure to check the listings often as tickets go quite quickly.

I just love it. It is perfect. Very small and cosy. You can take in drinks (in nice proper mugs and glasses) and you also get a blanket to snuggle up in. The screen is small, yes, don’t expect a mainstream lay out. But it is perfect for the venue’s size. I went to see pre-​screening of The Deep Blue Sea there and am sure I loved the film more because of having seen it in The Aubin. However, if you are driving, beware! The Tower Hamlets will charge you £265 for parking on a single yellow on Sunday before 2PM (as opposed to midday which is normal everywhere else)

I love going to the movies. I love sitting on comfy couches. And I love cocktails and gourmet treats. Who knew that these could all be combined in one place??! Well, at The Aubin Cinema they are. :)
Downstairs of the fancy clothing store Aubin and Wills, the Aubin Cinema is a cinema lover’s delight. You book ahead of time to get comfy lounge chairs or loveseats and can settle into watching a great indie film with a a beer in hand. The flicks are 13 quid a pop but that’s about how much they cost everywhere else and you don’t get fancy seats with all the rest! PERFECT date spot!

Aubin cinema is the perfect little cinema. Tucked away in the basement of a trendy Shoreditch clothes store it is the antithesis of the big multiplex chain cinemas which are so impersonal.
As well as showing a good mix of films (blockbusters and off-​beat foreign language films) Aubin is the comfiest and most relaxing cinema I’ve ever been to. The seats are velvet armchairs or, even better, two seater velvet sofas complete with cushions and tartan blankets!
It is the perfect cinema for a date as the sofas are made for getting cosy and the blankets and designed for snuggling under!
