It’s not my local, but I guess you could consider it my home away from home. My Aussie Rules team meets for training(and post-training pints) at the Alex each Sunday and there’s always plenty of fellow sports fans in the pub as well. They play all the football games on their many screens, as well as rugby and AFL games too. The drinks are reasonably priced and there’s loads of seating, what more could you ask for?

This is a good sports bar next to the(clapham common tube station. Is large– two story with lost of screens for sports viewing(and projectors). With decent drink selection(whiskeys, beers, ciders, and my choice– ales available) and classic pub meals available it makes a good place to settle in and watch your favorite match.

The ALexandra — One of the pubs where you can really enjoy the pint with Lads — great atmosphere, decent prices, great looking pub and loads of good people and Live sports as well! I‘ve been going to this pub for couple of years and would recommend it to everyone !

The Alexandra is a fairly unremarkable if dependable and well-located(by the Common and key bus stops) pub. It’s quite cosy inside, with plenty of space on the tables and benches to accommodate the group I came here with. Only two things of note stick out from my visit here: an oddball trying persistently to talk to our group, seemingly unable to pick up on our disinterest; the bar staff, one of whom defiantly insisted that they didn’t have a pale ale on tap despite me pointing it out. Still, the Adnams beer was well kept. It’d be unlikely to be able to persuade me to return on its own merits, but of some value if I were to find myself back here at some point.

When I visited this pub for the first time, my first thoughts were What a pub ! It became my favourite place in the area and it will stay for sure. I spent lots of hours here last summer and I met really nice guys.

Yay for a great pub to watch Rugby or Footie! A lot of the touch rugby teams drink here after their practice sessions on the common, so lots of Antipodeans here! Other than a great atmosphere on Rugby days(don’t do footie, sorry), it a fairly standard large pub, has a nice upstairs bit, with large windows that open out over the common in the summertime. If you manage to nab a stool there, it is a nice way to spend an afternoon.

a busy spot is the alex, probably because of its A1 location more than anything else. always has a good crowd about it and is the best place to watch sport in Clapham with its many TVs. However the toilets are’nt fit for a dog to use never mind human beings and i couldnt agree more with what the last reveiwer said about the manager, i drank in there for years and only ever recieved snarling bad manners from him. + the food they serve is from the thai restaurant next door, not cooked in house and sold for more than it costs where it was made!

The Alexandra is my new venue of choice to watch football courtesy of the quality of the projection screens which is unmatched. The best tip is to arrive early for the game as the bar can get uncomfortably busy around kick off.

This is either a 2-star place or 4, depending on what you’re there for. If you’re there to watch some footie or rugby… definitely four stars. Strategically placed & large TVs and projection screens mean you will most likely have a set(even if it’s a quarter-final World Cup game) AND will be able to see. Other nights, it’s a slightly rambling oversized place, and I’m not sure why you’d come here. Certainly not go out of your way for it. An uninspiring selection of beers. Six different types(and coldness levels) of your least favourite lagers, and Guinness. Only extra cold. But decently poured. So don’t go here, unless you’re up for a bit of footie. And, preferably, meeting friends.

Ah yes The Alexandra, the pub you go to, to meet friends before a night out in Clapham. It’s easy to find, you’ll always get get a drink at the bar quick but as soon as you’ve finished it you’ll want to move on. It’s got some colourful characters hanging around the pub outside so if you’re a girl on your own its not the most comfortable place to wait. The staff however are friendly and will always chat with you if they aren’t too busy. Nothing special here… move along!

The Alex… a vast and gregarious pub full of wood and signs/memorabilia adorning the walls and ceilings, usually full of aussies and brits alike and packed for the sport on TVs. It’s got three floors this place — the basement, the ground floor and the large upstairs. They’ve got plenty of big TVs for watching sport and they drag out some large projector screens for the big occasions. I watched the RWC2007 final in here and the atmosphere was great. You can come in here in your joggers and a shabby tshirt and you’ll feel comfortable. The range of beers is good and they’ll even serve you thai takeaway from the pepper tree a few doors down. I like it for a few beers at the start of a night or a recovery beer on a Sunday where you really don’t want any natural light in your eyes!

The Alex is a traditional pub located right next to Clapham Common tube station. The upstairs bar is a little more relaxed with sofas and darker lighting — the ground floor boasts interesting bric a brac and relics nailed to the ceiling and walls picked up(looted?) from… well…everywhere. If you can still see straight after a couple of pints of guiness, you’d have an interesting round of ‘eye spy’. The staff are friendly and are there to please. The Alex is well known amongst the sports watching crowds and puts on big screen action to complement the averagely priced drinks. Be prepared to pay with cash as they don’t accept any plastic for those larger orders. The Alex is a good friendly place that you can hang out at after work for a quick pint, or just to meet your friends — or on weekends with a wide diversity of people getting pretty lashed and having fun.

A great looking pub. I went for the Lazy Sundays live music night which was fantastic. Some great bands and acoustic sets, really friendly staff and some great surroundings. Good pint of Guinness as well. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I am sure I will be back there next week

I have spent many an afternoon in the Alexandra. As far as pubs go it’s pretty standard, but it is where all my friends in Clapham go to watch football. The pub has couches at various locations and we often snag one on the first floor near the TV. It’s nice that we are not far from the bar so we are able to enjoy drinks throughout the match. What I have really enjoyed about the Alexandra is that even on big match days it’s never overrun with people. I like that it’s crowded but not overflowing with wall to wall people. It’s a great pub with a nice vibe, a most enjoyable venue.

Traditional pub in the middle of the trendy ‘Cock’tail bars If you like drinking a proper pint amongst dusty vintage relics nailed to the walls this is the place for you. The Alex is a great pub for every occasion, but especially any live sporting event. It’s opposite the south side exit of Clapham Common tube, you won’t be able to miss it in the summer as you’ll see/hear the drinkers spilling out on the pavement. I would recommend taking advantage of being able to eat food from The Pepper Tree in here, if the PepperTree is busy(or you don’t like sharing a table of 12) dive into The Alex, grab a table upstairs and in your food in peace overlooking the common.

I loved it here when living in Clapham. It isn’t the sort of place you’d go for food, but its a genuine man’s pub which on a saturday afternoon is what i am after. Plenty of sports on TV, some Gaelic sports too, from what i remember, along with Football and some Rugby. There does seem to be a bit of a lack of an Irish accent behind the bar these days, but when the service is fast and friendly i guess you can’t complain.

Not really a fan of this place. I’d much rather go to the windmill or Belle Vue. Spent new year here a couple of years ago and it was pretty lame. Staff are generally nice, not a great selection of beers and the food looks passable. All in all, nothing to write home about.

This a pretty popular drinking hole — so u have trouble finding seats most nights and its not really a bar you stand around in, there no dance floor, this pub its design for yarning over a pint! Its old school, not been renovated recently, and looks alot like a western saloon. With the tube station and bus stops right outside its really handy to central London, and is a integral part of a night out in Clapham.

Once you get past the smell of urine and faeces that meets you as you enter downstairs, it’s actually a pretty cool place. I agree with Andrew that the downstairs area is a bit ropey and can sometimes have a somewhat unpleasant atmosphere. But on the whole it tends to be populated by a lively, vivacious and up-for-it crowd which makes for a good start to any evening if you have further plans for later on. Too bad they only serve lagers. Also when the lady behind the bar gave me sambucas instead of tequilas she refused to admit that she had made a mistake and got a bit grumpy. I’ll give it four stars for fun place to drink and getting-into-party-mood, but maybe only three overall.
