Finally we got to come back!!! After 4 years! Ok I got a little excited there. The prices seemed to have gone up a bit but I still had an excellent meal. When in London town again, I will return. I hope it is sooner than 4 years this time.

We got here early right before it open and about 15 minutes after we sat down on a saturday morning it was full. The all breakfast gives you a taste of everything and I really like the sausage and well season beans. The black pudding was ok but it might be my taste but i think exactly what I wanted to try a nice english breakfast on a budget.

I love S&M Cafés. I love the vibe; I love the food. I do not, however, have a love for this one. The food was on par with other locations, certainly. BUT The service was indifferent, bordering on negligent. No, the service was negligent. After sitting down, I had to walk up to one of the servers after five minutes to ask for a menu. Then after sitting around for ten minutes upon completing my meal, I had to walk up to one of the servers to ask for the bill. Then I had to pay for the meal at the till because none of the servers were ever going to come to the table to pick up my payment. Usually service wouldn’t make me give a place two stars, though. No. What really irked me about this location was the fact that it had a large sign outside that advertised its breakfasts(served all day). The sign said ‘Free toast and Free & unlimited tea or coffee with ANY breakfast meal’. Full stop. No stipulations. So, you see, I ordered a breakfast, which was on the ‘Breakfasts’ area of the menu I was given. And I ordered a tea. I only drank one cup, though. There was no need for me to take advantage of their bottomless offer. But when I got my bill, I noticed I was charged for this tea. It wasn’t expensive or anything, but it was the PRINCIPLE of the matter. I pointed this out to the server at the till, and he said that the deal was only good for breakfasts on the BREAKFAST menu. Erm… the breakfast menu? Didn’t I order the ‘all day breakfast’ advertised on the sign from the ‘breakfast’ area of the menu? Apparently the tea was only free if I had requested a breakfast menu and ordered my breakfast from it. At least, that’s what this server seemed to imply. Whatever the case, this S&M Café went down in my estimation. Their service sucked the big one and their advertising was, at the least, misleading but, more accurately, false. Tricksy false.

I have been anxiously awaiting the addition of UK to the Unilocalable locals, and now my wait is finally over. Yes, I can now publically declare, to the entire world, my love of S&M… *ahem* Sausage and Mash, that is. I am a breakfast fiend and I have had sausage of every nationality and creed… big and small… spicy and plain.(*ahem* mind out of the gutter, please!) None compare to the classic sausage from S&M. Ohhhh yes… it is comfort food at its best. I can easily eat six at a sitting. It’s the best thing since slice bread — no, no it’s immeasurably better than sliced bread. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water… my tummy growl… my head spin. I almost(almost) would move to London just to have S&M interwoven into my daily life — it’s that good. Ohhh, how I miss it. Frankly I have no idea what the other«non-classic» sausages are like, although I do recall not particularly liking the chicken sausage(with something green in it)… the name of which escapes me. But the five star is given to the sausage of my memory… untainted by the rest.

First of get your mind out of the gutter… it is Sausage and Mash. Whew! What can I say about S& M café… well I’ve been here plenty of times as a student and loved the food. I took my parents here while on vacation… or as the brits call it …” on um holiday”.Honestly, one of the reasons I took them here was for the shock value, the other was for them to get a feel of a British Diner. I was expecting some kind of drama or look of disbelief when I mentioned the name. Both parents were nonchalant and said something to the effect of «If you had woken up an hour early we wouldn’t be stuck in this traffic…» or some such… Ok, lets talk about the really good sausage, they have over 20 different kinds. I saw a couple of vegetarian sausages, but didn’t bother for obvious reasons! Breakfast is very good, hubby got the full English as did the parents. All of them enjoyed it and were oohing and ahhing over the black pudding. I personally thought the baked beans were errr a bit lacking, but nobody at the table thought so. I got the bangers and mash, bangers were excellent well cooked and tasty. I will definately be going back, I always spend half a day at Portebello Market everytime I am in London and S & M is short trot from the market.

S & M — NOTLIKETHAT, it stands for Sausage and Mash, as that is what this ‘posh’ café serves up to the willing folk of Notting Hill. With a vast menu of sausages, and yummy extras for your mash(cheese, mustard, that sort of thing), sausage lovers everywhere will find something to their tastes. Vegetarians BEWARE, they have only one veggie sausage on their menu, and it’s a terrible cheese and leek one, I like the quorn Cumberland ones — is that too much to ask for?! If they offered a wider veggie selection, I’d eat there all the time. I really love mash, and the interior of the café is great; like a clean, comfortable and up– market revamp of the traditional café. This branch is right by Portobello Market, so it does get busy at weekends. We all know the feeling — need … warm … comfort food, well this is a safe bet.

There’s nothing I like better in winter then to indulge myself in some stodgy British food and nothing gives me greater pleasure then the stodgiest and most comforting of all British dishes, sausage and mash. S&M Café, situated opposite Portobello Road market, specialises in this dish offering 20 different types of sausages and numerous versions of mash. With its red and white checked tables and old fashioned wall paper the restaurant exudes a 1950s atmosphere that is as warming as the food. As a traditionalist I opted for the standard pork sausage and mash and was not disappointed as both were excellent. Open late and fully licensed the café gets busy at weekends because of the market and the best time to visit is a weekday afternoon,
