Johnny Fly is a quirky, atmospheric cocktail bar. It’s in an area of Battersea(close to Battersea Arts Centre, though on the opposite side of the road from it) that is virtually devoid of places to go for a drink in the evening. Its proprietor is very friendly. It’s a small place, with seating for no more than around 15 – 20 people. The décor, which has to be seen to be believed, can best be described as American retro(circa the 1960s). On my recent visit, cocktails were £6 on a ‘2 for 1′ basis. You cannot order two different cocktails under this offer: you get 2 servings of whichever one you ask for. My piña coladas were excellent: just sweet enough, without being overly so. The music playing on the sound system was stylish pop. On my visit, it included tracks by Elton John, Culture Club and Elvis Presley(who features prominently in one of the many displays of memorabilia scattered around the attractively decorated(and cluttered!) walls). Johnny Fly is a very welcome addition to an area of Battersea that needs more such places. It’s well worth visiting.
