This was quite possibly the worst yoga class I have ever attended in my life. I walked in 2 mins late, and the teacher barked«Sit down!» at me. Then during the practice, the teacher literally slams down a couple of blocks on my May and says«use them!» She also swore during the class, and walks past me again and says loudly«go take a basics class.» Then during the last 15 mins when I was tired and just resting in child pose, she walks over and taunts me to the whole class and asks why I’m in child pose, so I had to announce that I had just flown in from New York and was tired. Rudest teacher I have ever had in my life, and I’ve been to yoga studios all over the world. Perhaps I’m used to a gentler, more soothing and nurturing approach but I believe that every person’s yoga practice is their own and that they shouldn’t be chastised or condescended in class. Complete waste of money as I had paid for an intro package and will never return or recommend the studio to anyone in London.

I was searching of a studio to practice while on secondment form NY. My fellow yogis recommended Jivamukti. I’d never attended the branch over in NY, but had maybe friends rave about it. So I went to try out studio on the very economical UK resident, first time to the studio discount of £10 for 10 days. I milked it to say the least. I went 4 times. I love Cat’s class and have since been going to her Monday night Shoreditch classes. I live closer to east London, so it works better for my schedule. The classes are pricey but I can assure you that you will sweat. There is about a half hour of chanting, followed by vigorous vinyasa practice. They also have monthly satsang. I was fortunate to attend one in a park. Free hour session of class on grass and a lovely vegan picnic to follow. Jivamukti has a great community feel.

I simply cannot say enough positive things about the studio, the instructors and the way that I feel when I leave the studio after a diabolically intense 90 minute session. Each instructor brings an enormous wealth of knowledge and character to their classes. The classes all include Vinyasa(flowing asana sequences), hands-on adjustments, Pranayama(breathing exercises), meditation, and Sanskrit chanting. While music is integral to the classes, each instructor brings their flavour to what that means, from the profound to some serious rock — unlikely but apt for an intense practise like jiva. Find an instructor that speaks to you. Stewart, usually is one of my favourites but if you are not prepared to have a very honest and dreaded Scottish adjuster in your face chose Cat or Emma. The prices are high but standard for these studios, and I think sadly they tend to make the ashtanga-based practise slightly inaccessible. Another reason I can’t give the studio the full and highest rating is the location. Oh Jivamukti, I love you but can’t you just open near a station near me…

This is an ashtanga based yoga school where the classes are dynamic and physically demanding. Throughout the day there are up to seven classes to choose from with start times staggered from 7.30am till 9pm. The centre itself has a smart, hippy edge that spreads throughout two studios. Not just a physical thing, the classes involve chanting and a deep look at spirituality. Classes cost £12ph and £14 for hour and a half classes.
