I like that when I visit H&B I can ask almost any member of staff a question about their products and they have some knowledge — or just ask about general nutrition and they’re happy to give advice — or just ask where something is and… you catch my drift, don’t you? It’s a small/medium sized store, which was previously located in Moorgate. I’ve bought slimming products, snack bars, vitamins, cereals, teas and, so far, everything I’ve needed has been available. They also have a small cooler section which I noticed stocks meat alternatives and a wall almost solely dedicated to body building supplements(frequented by many a city gent I might add!). It’s worth popping in just for snacks as there’s usually some sort of offer on and the price gram for gram is usually better than the small enticing packs you find near the counters of the nearby sandwich shops.

I used to work just round the corner from this branch of the popular health food store Holland and Barrett, and i spent many a lunchtime lost in here, buying more food than i could eat in a day. I love their chickpea noodles; they’re nicer than crisps and so addictive. They have a large nut and dried fruit section as well as rows and rows of vitamins and supplements. They do great gluten and wheat free food stuffs, and have a large selection of this too. Great if you’re a bit of a health freak, you should definitely check it out.

If you shook me hard enough you could probably use me as a percussive instrument owing to the amount of supplements I take. Yes, I am a bona fide health freak, a hangover from a youth spent at Steiner Schools surrounded by iridologists, naturopaths and alternative health freaks of countless other persuasions. As such I have tended to feel a little lost in Shoreditch. There being hundreds of places to buy a drink and not one purveyor of Milk Thistle, Vitamin B and Evening Primrose capsules. Just a few of my own personal drugs of choice. And so I’ve become acquainted with the Holland and Barrett store on the fringes of Leadenhall Market, this great British health food chain Mecca for the health conscious. Stocking a dizzying range of vitamins, minerals and supplements, a good variety of vegan, wheat/gluten free food and the kind of herbal teas that haven’t quite hit the mainstream — i.e. Tesco — Holland and Barrett should sate even the most hard-core health fanatics and the staff are lovely to boot.

I’m not really one to shop at health-food stores, but Holland & Barrett have so much more than just diet pills and protein bars. They have a fantastic range of dried fruit, nuts, and many other healthy snacks, as well as vitamins and supplements for all requirements. Their staff are really helpful and know their stuff, which I was surprised about.(If you have an ailment or illness they are great and suggesting supplements). They always seem to have a sale or promotion on so prices are pretty good. Mostly, though, I keep going back for the great prices on goji berries, and the dried cranberries, which are simply divine.
