A thoughtful, broad selection of books on LGBTQ history, life, theory, and more. Lovely helpful staff will help you find whatever you need, and order in what they don’t have.

Who knew places like this still exist?! Wonderful little book shop with absolutely charming and helpful staff. I was in a hurry to leave for a gay wedding abroad and needed a groom/groom wedding card. Very helpful man also showed me an awesome book about the history of same sex marriages that my friends are gonna LOVE. I only wish I hasn’t been racing out of town, would have loved to have stayed and chatted and browsed longer! Thank you kind sir!!!

One of London’s gems. Great curation of books, very knowledgable and lovely staff, and a pillar in the community overall. Skip Amazon and head to Gays the Word.

Great shop where you make wonderful discoveries. Very knowledgable and helpful staff. If you are interested in queer writing there is no better store.

What a great shop! What a great Street! Just about everything wonderful from the past in one street … Love it! Jim was on the desk when I went in & he was so helpful: looking stuff up on the Net, suggesting publishers for my unpublished novel — one I inherited — needs to get to press; I will definitely go back.

This bookshop seems to have everything under the sun that relates to the LGBT society. The staff here are very helpful and decent. I’ve bought quite a few DVDs from this store.

I love books. None of this online, kindle malarky for me. I love the smell of new books, the feel of being the first one to open their pages and devouring them in one sitting. I love Gay’s the Word, and it’s so nice to see a gay-centred bookstore in London, managing to keep Amazon and Borders at bay. Their collection on gay politics, both of the US and Britain, made my heart sing; had I not been with a friend, I would have stayed in their for hours and walked out with several hundred of £ worth of books. Postcards, signs, fiction, non-fiction…sigh. The beat of my heart. The staff were also super nice and didn’t hover or make you feel like you HAVE to buy anything… that always annoys me when Border’s employees giv eyou the cranky side-eye. If only I had found it whilest writing my dissertation… damn it.

I went here when studying queer theory at uni and was completely charmed by the place. It’s tucked away on a really cute little road near Russell Square and inside, it’s the type of place you feel happy and welcomed to browse in. The man behind the counter was really friendly and helpful, and we ended up chatting for a good while about the essay I was researching for. I went in looking for course books, but came out with a couple of extras I’d discovered inside. All of the books have a gay theme but cover all genres from reference to fiction to travel to erotica — whatever you fancy. It’s unusual to find a gay section in a bookshop, let alone a whole store devoted to the subject, so this is a real specialised treat. You’re almost certain to find something you didn’t know before, and then you can take your purchase to one of the many coffee shops nearby.

I come to Gay’s the word for all my gay magazine needs. Not my pornographic needs, this is a proper bookstore. Wink. Anyway, this store has a great selection of Gay themed books and magazines. It’s a really nice place to have a browse around and pick up a copy free copy of Boyz. I also saw this book I want about Femme Lesbians. It’s been advertised around. The staff is really helpful here and once I told the cashier my tale of woe (femme diva comic seeking venue) he took my email and forwarded it on to his comic friend who does the circuit. Gays The Word is great!

I really liked this shop; I found several great books there, and the staff was friendly and helpful, but not even a little bit annoying. Avid gay readers of all over the world, try it! :)

It is a great shop with lots of reading to the gay guy. I live close to it and I am going to try to upload photos to all the local shops. :)

As another reviewer has posted, there’s rumours that this shop might close. Well, I asked a member of staff, and the good news is that right now it’s safe, as a new lease has just been signed. However, as with all small shops, it needs people to keep supporting it. So, what do you get? Of course it’s mainly books which are lesbian and gay related. It actually sells both first hand and second hand books. They also have a nice range of cards and postcards(many of which will appeal to people who aren’t gay by the way), and have a notice board full of varied suggestions for events, clubs, courses etc. The atmosphere is friendly and comfortable.

I love this book shop. It has the feel of a nice old book shop, the only difference is that all the books are gay or deal with gay themes. Unlike so many gay book shops, it doesn’t have a sordid feel to it and provides a very comfortable environment to find fiction or non-fiction books regarding gay themes and issues, especially for people who may feel uncomfortable looking for these in more main stream book shops. I heard a nasty rumour some time ago that this shop was going to close down. I haven’t been there in a few months and am really hoping that this isn’t true. If it closed, it would be the end of an era and a very sad day for the gay community in London!
