A reliable, cheap café with a long display counter crammed with sandwich and jacket potato fillings, quiche, cakes, pastries, reheatable pasta and chilli etc. Everything’s on the plain but substantial side; not at all fancy. On the doorstep of UCL hospital and university(staff from both get a discount). Loads of seating at the back, in a big room with slightly dim light — perfect for slinking cosily and anonymously into the corner for a quiet lunchtime read on a rainy day. I think it would be a bit of a shame to sit back there on a nice day though.

I am suitably impressed with Fitzroy Patisserie. Firstly the sheer choice on options got me excited. They have an interesting selection on hot meals such as curry & rice, chilli and lasagne. There are a plethora of pastries and lots of fantastic sandwich options. And not forgetting the wondrous cream cakes lulling me in, whispering sweet nothings to the money in my pocket. I went for a £5.50 large chilli & rice, and enjoyed the hot savoury goodness right down to the last bite. I was in such a happy place I let a wasp feed off the lid that was next to me. I am not sure where I found the will power to resist the cakes, but I managed not to purchase one. If you work for the NHS or are affiliated to UCL you get a discount on purchases. I will certainly be back, as the seating areas are clean and warmly lit, and would make a great escape on a cold rainy day.

After doing a spot of camera shop browsing on Tottenham Court Road recently I got rather peckish. I spotted this café and decided to rest my weary legs for a bit. I ordered a mushroom and cheese sandwich and a cup of earl grey tea and took a seat. I was a bit taken back by the price. I think £5 is a bit much to ask for something so basic and bland, I mean for 2 slices of bread, a few mushrooms and a bit of cheese toasted I wouldn’t expect to pay more than £2.50 but there you go. I really don’t think I’ll be back for more somehow.
