During a freezing cold search for a hot coffee and a light bite, my friend and I stumbled across this lovely spot just south of elephant and castle. A cluster of shipping containers create a vibrant space for a mix of pop up restaurants and bars. Elephant shack features plenty of local products ranging from nude coffee, roasted just off brick lane, and soft drinks to tequila and chocolate. Their specialities include homemade flat reads– which in the surface maybe seems a bit uninteresting, until you realise that ever detail in their recipe is carefully selected: organic stone ground flour, filtered water etc. the flatbreads are hand kneaded and baked on a stone just in the front of the shop. After a lovely chat with Gary, one of the owners, we quickly realised that this attention to detail features in each menu item and every product sold. They pride themselves on local provenance, supporting the community and above all, offering local people some proper food and drink in a welcoming and unpretentious environment. Also inspired was their signature dirty latte– same basics as you’d expect with just a hint of chai spice, giving the drink a great kick. They are redesigning the small(cosy?) seating area and are developing a small plates menu which will roll out in a few weeks. Can’t wait to check in out!
