After NYE shenanigans it was time to recover at Dog Eat Dog and get our munch on. Located a short walk from Angel underground station, once you enter the premises you’ll see a decent sized space with a few long tables and high chairs and some smaller tables dotted along the window. At the rear of the room there is a drinks station of locally brewed soft drinks on tap. There were lots of us so we took up residence on one of the long tables. I ordered a House Dog with caramelised onions and green dog relish, French fries and was given a cup for unlimited soft drink. On paper the hog dog sounded good but in reality it really was quite average, as were the French fries and the special sauces weren’t special enough to spend money here again. The unlimited soda station was a nice feature but although I didn’t try all the flavours, the ones I did try were just ok. I liked the fact that they were made locally though. I can see more guys hanging out at Dog Eat Dog than women especially with the special array of beers and other alcoholic beverages. There’s also only one dessert on the menu. Overall I thought the food was average and overpriced for what it was.

Hot dogs as a meal whether gourmet or not, does not make a meal. To me hot dogs are snack food. So I tried the lamb dog with beetroot tzatziki, watercress, shredded cabbage and pomegranate. On paper it sounds great, but when it arrived, the sausage was quite small compared to say the house dog frankfurter, and seems fairly pricey at £8.50 for a sausage that is hidden under some vegetable toppings. It tasted ok and not one I would have again. The sweet potato fries which we ordered to accompany the dog was not as large as the waiter made it out to be that we could have two portions for 6 people! Livi S and I shared one each and then decided to order another as it was really not enough to share. I do not drink fizzy soft drinks so could not make use of the unlimited soda on tap, brewed locally in Hackney. The service was very relax and the staff friendly. Nice place to have a drink and a snack though.

Don’t get me wrong, I like this place, but I probably not be more inclined to take away or to come for the beers and fries. I arrived super early, so got to try a beer while I waited, and to cure my sore head after the New Years excess. The waiter recommended a punk dog ipa which was delicious! My second beer almost a recommendation was a darker ipa, and not really to my taste. Price wise it was over a fiver per beer, which certainly isn’t cheap, but hey I guess it’s craft, so you expect to pay Food wise, I ordered the vegetarian dog which with a toppling of guacamole came to £8, which I thought was a tad bit pricey. The dog was quite spicy with the addition of jalapenoes and when I’d added the Dalston chilli sauce(which is totes amazing — like I’m planning to stalk out Dalston to buy some soon) was like lighting your mouth on fire! I love spice, so this was great. The sweet potato fries were insane! I’m coming back for these. At almost £4 a pop, it’s reasonable, but certainly not massive like the waiter told us. We definitely needed to order an extra one. Overall for £23 it wasn’t the largest feast I’ve ever seen, and I would have to admit a bit overpriced.

An amazing brew pub right in the heart of Islington. The staff is chill and a great sense of ownership. Owned by Brew Dog. Fantastic simple menu of dogs and always adding something different! Been here a few times and will keep coming back. Beers are very good. Feels like a really great American brew pub with UK flair.

Hot dogs really are just not a thing in the UK, are they? Maybe at barbecues, at best at ‘American’ restaurants. This means that gourmet dogs really have to run fast on their tiny wiener legs to even be noticed. Luckily Dog Eat Dog opened right across the street from my place, crucial hangover walking distance. It replaced the old Giraffe location, the less chains in Angel the better. I mean, Dog Eat Dog is part of a chain too. But part of the Brew Dog chain, which I love. I wasn’t so keen on eating here as there is nothing remotely healthy on the menu, but again, I was too hungover to make a decision anywhere else. We ordered two dogs from the menu, they have basic dogs and ‘gourmet’ versions. We got the Chicago dog with chilli and cheese and the kimchi, with teriyaki sauce and nori strips. I also got to try out the soda fountain. £3 for unlimited refills of local Square Root soda, brewed in Hackney! That and one beer and two sides cost me £31, very steep for what it was. £8.50 for a hot dog is just way too much. They were okay, but not huge and certainly not spilling over with toppings. The kimchi one ended up being a bit sad as the teriyaki sauce soaked the bun. And the chilli dog just wasn’t very cheesy or decadent. I was still hungry after this meal. We also had the sweet potato fries, which was the highlight of the meal. Honestly, I love Brew Dog and it’s a fantastic location but this is much better to come for some craft beers with friends, and maybe order a snack than a destination eatery.
