Walked by this quaint pub on s neighborhood corner and really wanted to like it. Unfortunately it took nearly 5 minutes of standing by the door to get seated. Hostess does not smile, nor helpful. Freezing outside and they don’t offer any soup? I know they can open a can as my truffle oil pancake cannelloni for 12.75 was reheated, had no truffle oil scent nor taste, frozen spinach inside with canned sauce and pre-grated cheese. My husbands fish and chips… frozen fish and chips! No HP Sauce? No malt vinegar brought? There are soooo many great gastropubs near here, do yourself a favor and skip this one…

This area is choc full of great gastro pubs but this is fast becoming our favourite. Nestled on the corner of St Peter’s Square, you couldn’t wish for more lovely surroundings. It’s just off King St which isn’t the most promising, but St Peter’s Square is a picture of Georgian loveliness with its park in the middle of the square which is open to all. The Carpenters is almost more of a restaurant than a pub now really but they keep the tables to the outside walls which means you get lots of space. And there’s a charming garden outside to sit at too. The menu includes favourites like fish and chips, fish pie and hamburger, but they also do lovely sharing plates — the mezze is excellent — salt beef hash and more seasonal stuff like guinea fowl. It’s a menu where they are clearly stretching themselves but all the dishes come out great. The fish pie is perfect. Big chunks of cod and salmon with prawns and peas adding a nice bite and a lovely white sauce. It is served in a pretty bowl and topped with lashings of potato and cheese. A real winner. The bar people are all friendly and check this out, they serve Addlestones cider. Liquid marajuana the old man used to call it. It tastes like apple juice but after three you know it is nothing of the sort. We’ve never had a bad meal here and it’s a great place to sit and while away a Sunday making the papers they provide mucky with your food spillage. Rather their Observer than your Sunday Sport innit? Quality tucker in classy surroundings. There’s plenty of choice around these parts but this is top three material.

«the local» Another local pub near the office. We come here often for drinks and for lunch. On the vegetarian side, the food leaves a little to be desired. I’m not a huge fan of the pasta or other dishes I’ve tried, and it seems a little pricey for lunch. All that said, the staff is very nice and it’s a great place to grab after work drinks if that’s what you’re in for. There’s a nice back patio if it’s nice out… and they rarely kick you out for making too much noise ;).

I love this place, the food is great, and the staff efficient and courteous. They have a heater under the large garden umbrella for the smokers to keep warm. Inside the table layout is has enough space to feel comfortable, whilst not having to hear other peoples conversation. Consistently good, treat yourself, but book ahead.

Exceptionally good food in this smallish, intimate pub. Very popular especially on the weekends so book ahead, the food is modern British, not a huge selection on the menu so if you are with fussy eaters phone ahead — but the food has always been extremely good everytime I’ve visited, with good service and a nice atmosphere.

Is it a pub or is it a restaurant, from outside it looks very much like a pub but when you step inside you feel like you are in a restaurant. Well arranged tables and chairs gives it the feel of an eatery, the only thing giving it away is the pumps on the bar that encourage you to stay and that it is indeed a pub. Great quality food is the main attraction however and I feel it lacks a pub feel and for that reason I wouldn’t become the local pub. British food all the way with quail, haddock etc and a good wine list if not a little pricey. I am told that it is owned by a well know news reader who lives locally and who purchased it to save it from extinction. Not totally sure on that one but the place certainly works from a food perspective. Lovely garden which you may be evicted to if you are not eating as preference is not for drinkers when the food is in demand. Bit of a clash between food and pub, I guess you are welcome if they don’t have many food bookings and put up with if they are busy.
