Boconcept is the best furniture shop I have ever bought from so I could not disagree more with these other reviews. I just visited a few store along Tottenham Court Road and Boconcept blew me away. Their staff were so relaxed and willing(not like the normal sales people that are like foot in the door sales men!) I had been nervous the first time I bought because there are some websites out there with some very bad experiences but they seem quite old so I took a gamble. They drew up my living room on their computer to make sure it would fit. I had 60 fabrics to chose from at Boconcept. Habitat had 4! My sofa is being made to order not lying stacked in a warehouse somewhere and cost me £1100, not the cheapest but I got the size I needed. It is the first shop I have ever been in where every item can be bought in the same wood colour, I think they manufacture it all themselves. I was looking for my dining chairs to be in the same fabric as my sofa and BoConcept was the only company to do that. I went into Dwell and they couldn’t even do the chair legs in the same colour as the sofa legs, never mind the fabric! I had bought before from the Bo concept Glasgow store so had a good idea what to expect.

I was taken in by Bo Concept — looked around the showroom and spotted some fantastic looking items, paid and waited for delivery. The furniture was to be delivered and assembled by the delivery guys. They turned up and did a reasonable job, but the stuff that came out of the flat packs was just awful: bits missing, drawer fronts that didn’t match. They were technically the same wood, but from such different parts of the tree that the furniture looked like patchwork. So the delivery guys said that they’d order in the missing/replacement bits and get everything fixed. When they came back a couple of weeks later to put everything right they still didn’t have the right bits they needed. So after two days off work waiting for deliveries of really substandard and expensive furniture I had enough, sent back the faulty stuff and vowed never to deal with this company again.

Bo Concept is one of those stores that looks really lovely from the outside, but I can’t actually envisage myself buying anything from. When I was refurnishing my flat a few years ago, I needed a fair bit of furniture, and Bo Concept was one of the places I went to, alongside Habitat, Ikea, Heals, Cargo, Peter Jones… but was the only place I didn’t buy anything from. I pop in their stores here and in Brighton from time to time, but still haven’t made the plunge. Why not? Well two answers, really. First, it’s helpful to know that Bo Concept are Danish, their most global furniture retailer, and are high priests of minimalism. In the showroom, there is no doubt that their furniture and accessories look lovely. The concept comes from the same Scandinavian heritage as Ikea, but with much higher quality(it’s not flat-pack) and much more ruthlessly streamlined design. Ikea looks positively chintzy in comparison. Therein lies part of the problem, for me. The design is so stripped back, that I can’t imagine it fitting in with any of the rest of my stuff. Look at their website, and almost every room is painted white or black, or both. Every window is huge, aluminium, slick. Every room is achingly tidy, the models achingly beautiful, even by the standards of glossy brochures. It’s like a concept hotel. You’d have to buy everything from them to achieve the look. But who actually lives like this?(Interestingly, I couldn’t find any children on their web-site). Furthermore, as I so often find with such designer-conscious furniture, it doesn’t feel all that comfortable to sit in or on. Sofa backs are painfully low, all the surfaces are so hard, and so on. And then there’s the price. Bo is expensive: sofas start around £1,500 and go up to £7,500, bedside tables start at £180, coffee tables at £400. And so on. You can get well designed furniture, of similar quality, for a lot less elsewhere, and still have some left over for a great holiday. That said, I may keep trying. It’s nice to visit their showrooms — and then head back to my comfy clutter…
