If you’re a real ale drinker and if your choice of tipple comes from Lewes, I guess this would be kind of your Mecca. I’m neither. As such, I’m afraid to say there is not much to recommend it. Staff were nice. Décor and and overall atmosphere were decidedly«low key”* There are better pubs nearby where I daresay you can get a good pint of Harveys… * «Low key» in this context actually meant«shabby» and«non-existent»

george123 I think you got there on a bad day, lewes is a small town and everybody often knows everybody else. most of the regulars I meet in the John Harvey are middle aged and mature people, quite possibly the locals you refer to were locals to lewes rather than regular barflies to the JH The harveys is at is best straight from the keg, the food spot on and the building, fully refurbished not so long ago was used as harveys offices following the tragic fire over the road. well worth a visit to eat or to drink. some very nice old photos on the wall

The John Harvey Tavern is situated opposite the Harvey’s brewery so you can’t get much more local that this when it comes to drinking regional ale. The Harvey’s Sussex Best is always a good bet but they do have a wide range of house and seasonal beers. Its a cosy little pub, all exposed beams and open fires. I prefer the main bar area as opposed to the back room as this does tend to lack a bit in atmosphere. I didn’t eat here so can’t comment on the food, but its a nice traditional pub in the nice traditional town of Lewes.

The John Harvey tavern is what you might refer to as a free range pub. While the inside is splendidly homely and full of things like old wine barrels and big oak beams(making it the perfect place for winter drinking) the outside of this well fronted pub can be a perfect place to drink in summer. As the pub is set back from the road on a little side street it serves as a safe place to have a little wander with your pint. In most cases the wander will take you to the large car park area behind Argos, which has a low wall overlooking the river. This is a great place to sit, sup and chat away for a few pints. The prices here are good too and the ales are of course well travelled as they have only come across the street from the Harvey’s brewery. Like many places in Lewes despite being in the middle of a bustling town there is a good solid local feel here making this a worth while trip out of Brighton at any time of year.

Harvey’s ales are pretty common through the Sussex area, taking pride and place in the best of ale houses. The John Harvey Tavern definitely goes a bit further, being the home of this fine brewery. They sell a large selection of Harvey’s ales, offering a number of ‘guest’ ales that cannot be found elsewhere. They also sell food, i came here for a Roast dinner a few months ago and left with no complaints. The pub itself is nice, very rustic and also quite small. The inside is quite old looking, with the tables and chairs being somewhere between antique and tatty. This is definitely one for anybody who considers themselves a fan of good beer.

I managed to turn up just in time to get lunch from here recently and it was great. A lovely pub made even better by the staff. They were really engaging, letting us try the Ales and making our food orders special. They even brought a bowl of water over for the dog we had with us which was very sweet. The food arrived so fast I hadn’t even sipped at my pint, hearty portions of Garlic Chicken, Sausages and mash were enjoyed by all. Really special place and naturally has choice ales rotating regularly.

The John Harvey Tavern is bang opposite the Harvey’s Brewery and right next to the River Ouse so position wise, you can’t get much better than riverside ale drinking! Its a really warm(they’ve got a great woodburner), rustic little pub with friendly staff serving happy locals and first time visitors alike. They have a good selection of real ales and also some pretty hefty ciders. I never thought a 7.2% pint would actually taste nice but it does. Dangerously so! The food here — especially the steaks are excellent. Try a glass of the house red with a nice rare Sirloin and you won’t be disappointed. They have live jazz every Wednesday night too, a lot less hectic than a night out in Brighton so worth a trip once in a while but I think lunchtime is the best here.

On this particular visit there was lots of loud locals sitting outside. They were very drunk and swearing out loud. The landlord came out and told them to keep it down. He spoke to them using their names so obviously they had to be locals. This was about 3pm on a Sunday! The pub serves good Real al and are very busy with the demand for food. Its the usual menu of Sunday roasts and chips and other regular types of pub fare. I must admit I won’t be rushing back here due to the rough locals that use it!
