Connoisseurs of fine wine meat and cheese may as well stay away from this place. But lovers of lager, ale and pork scratchings may just find a place in their heart for The Queen. It’s a real pub with real people, friendly service and good beer. The loos could do with a coat of paint but hey, are real pub toilets meant to be amazing? +1 for the queen.

I am of the firm opinion that if a pub is going to offer coffee during the day it should, a. serve palatable coffee and, b. be accessible to customers. I called in here i search of a warming drink and found myself with a cup of lukewarm dishwater which I sat and drank in a rather cold, empty bar. I decided to avail myself of the sanitary facilities which served their purpose admirably but only after I’d negotiated the obstacle course due to the fact that cleaning had at some stage begun and hadn’t yet ended.

The Queen is by far not the coolest pub I have ever been in, but it may be the friendliest. When we first arrived, my friends and I were probably the youngest drinkers by about 20 years and we were certainly the only people not on first name terms with all the bar staff. We had braved The Queen in search of a good local pub quiz that we could go to without having to drive into town or Headingley and the Queen, with its cheap beer and wine and friendly regulars, hits the spot. A year later we have a regular table, a regular order and a personal best pub quiz score of 20 out of 25(althought it would never be enough to win!). We have also won the picture prize a few times and our £10 voucher bought five of us a round! It just goes to show you don’t have to live in a cool area to be within walking distance of a decent watering hole, although I would reccomend adding some soda or lemonade to the(slightly dodgy tasting) wine.
