Having seen an offer for sirloin steak and a starter or dessert for 2 people at £14, I had to purchase this offer and redeem right away! So upon arriving at this pub and not realising that the entrance did in fact look like the backdoor, we were seated in a cosy pub. Having a quick look at the set menu, I opted for the prawn crostini’s to accompany my steak. I thoroughly enjoyed my starter, a sweet chilli marinaded prawns on crispy sliced baguette with a salad base. My steak was medium cooked and it was quite nice, especially for the price I paid for this, with the usual sides that come with a steak. Good food, and good value for money, makes this a good place to dine!

Stepping down some old steps and in to… an alliterative joke I thought would be funnier before I wrote it, you’d be mistaken for thinking you’ve walked in to a film set. Not so much due it being over-run by bevies of Hollywood starlets(although I’m not saying that definitely couldn’t happen) but rather it looks like they’ve only bothered to refurbish one side of it. It’s a peculiarity that adds an eccentric charm to what is pretty small space, although once you’re sat down to eat it feels cosy rather than cramped, and you really should come here to eat. It’s a small menu of hearty traditional French dishes, but fairly priced for the portions and incredibly fairly priced for the quality. I’m actually clinically addicted to tartiflette(a kind of French gourmet hot-pot) so they only really need one item to keep me happy, but having tasted that and the beef bourguignon I would trust the mini-wizard in their kitchenette to cook me anything. In fact, they could make me eat it outside in the rain and this place would still get 5 stars for the food. Bar wise, they have decent draft beers and a contemporary selection of alcopops like Rekorderling, Crabbies, etc, plus a fairly brutal offer of 3 Jagers for a fiver for the local after work crowd to thoroughly embarrass themselves on. If they can all fit in.

Surprised to see just one review of The Old Steps on Unilocal, and a rather unflattering one at that. The bar has received far more positive comments on other websites and, to be sure, I’d place it among the best bars in Leeds. It’s a small but friendly place and offers a wide selection of beers, including two or three draught ales. Its food is excellent and all freshly prepared by the French chef. Meals are better priced than any other bar I know in the area. Perhaps Rob W visited the place when the kitchen was shut?

Hard to believe given that I work & live only a couple of minutes away from here — but this was the first time I’d been in here! It’s very much a pub — nothing fancy about it — there’s beer, spirits & wine — a few seats & a little bit of standing area. If that’s what you’re looking for, then there’s nothing wrong with the venue, but there sure isn’t anything fancy about it. I think if you’re looking for a private venue for a party with maybe around 30 mates then this could work well for you.

A fantastic bar for a lunchtime meal at exceptionally good prices. The food served up by young French chef Raphie is imaginative, beautifully presented, and second to none. The bar is deservedly very popular and serves local Leeds ale, wine, soft drinks and coffee. The barman John Snow who is involved in the venture with Raphie and Danny is highly efficient. An ideal spot for a quick lunch and they also do special event nights ie for Valentine’s evening when they serve up sophisticated meals at very reasonable prices. Highly recommended on every level.
