Popped in with husband for a couple of drinks in a bid to delay returning home to our annoying teenagers. Impressed by the cosiness and mellow atmosphere. A retro interior with intimate corners and comfy leather sofas as well as the normal bar furniture. We will return again although I wish they did bar snacks as well as drinks.

The first gem of information came when we asked the barman whether this was a bar or a restaurant and he told us they weren’t really sure what they were. I was impressed by the seating which seemed to cover several different styles(I could see myself sitting in different areas according to my mood and the company I was in). The menu seemed to offer a fairly wide range and also offered a 2 for £12 on selected dishes at certain times. I think what struck me most was that it is rare these days for the manager of a place to sit down and chat whilst taking your order and even rarer for said manager to talk about having just enjoyed food elsewhere.

Food here second to none — best I’ve had in years, completely amazing… venison steaks highly recommended. Cocktails excellent value, staff very entertaining but kept busy as this place really fills up fast. Open log fire a nice touch. Overall style very warm and welcoming. Unusual copper bar and tables. Tiny little terrace at the back. Coming back for my 30th birthday… will keep you posted!!!

I’ve suddenly come to the realisation that I must love tapas bars, so in true Melissa style I’ll continue with more of the same. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a tapas elitist; it must be a particularly Spanish stage of my live I’m going through. I’ll seek medical guidance if it continues. So out of the city centre and it’s the pleasant area of Horsforth. Now I must admit I rather liked the fact that Medusa used to be known as the Severed Head. Class name but maybe not the one you’d think of first when naming a restaurant. So with a change of name came a change of food. It’s not the world’s biggest menu but there is plenty to get your teeth into. Spicy meats, marinated olives, fish and fresh vegetables are all combined for some rich and tasty dishes. I always save room for a cheeky dessert here, which is easily done if I avoid anything too heavy. Marbled Chocolate Teardrop anyone? Do it, you deserve a treat. If you want to take advantage of their deals too, head down before 7.30pm through the week and pick up two courses for ten pounds. If that doesn’t take your fancy, check out one of events including a blues night. Jazz ahoy, nice!

Went here for a Christmas meal on a Friday night. Not often the way to see a place at its best but I have to say that I was very impressed. The place has a friendly and relaxed feel to it from the minute you walk through the front door this was helped by the staff who were friendly and helpful. The service was very good especially considering how busy the place was and the food was excellent. If I had to pick anything as an issue it could be that the place was clearly so popular that it could be tricky to physically get to the bar on occasions as the night went on. Overall a great little place that I can recommend without hesitation and somewhere I will definitely visit again.

The reasonably new Medusa(it was the scarily named gastropub The Severed Head until not long ago) is Horsforth’s only real tapas bar, and it comes close to being a very good example of what tapas should be. The refurbished interior works well for a tapas bar, providing a casual and informal set-up that creates a similarly laid-back atmosphere — think sofas rather than tables and chairs. The service was good, and I received my dishes quickly and at the same time so I could enjoy tapas the way it should be eaten. However, the food was not all as spectacular as the service or décor. I chose(from the huge menu) the chorizo, olives, bravas and tortillas, and, other than the olives, it was mainly slightly below bar — but perhaps this is because I’m used to the high standards set by Viva La Cuba. Medusa is only a baby in the tapas world, but when it realises so match its class and service with its food it will surely be huge.
