Although this is no Forest of Dean, Gipton Wood is a decent enough place to have a walk round if you have a spare Sunday and don’t want to venture miles from Leeds to see a bit of nature. It is mostly made up of oak, sycamore and beech trees which makes it a beautiful place to be in autumn as these trees, most especially beech trees, give off a beautiful orange shade and can literally cover the pathways with their autumnal shedding. Wellington boots are certainly recommended, with thick socks, if you are going to head out for a walk round Gipton at that time of year. This wood has quite a few access points, but the one I know best is on Roundhay Road — I pass it on my bus to work, and is very clearly signposted as you will see from my photograph! I’m a total country girl, so would probably give a random field a good review, but this is a great place to walk off a Sunday Roast or just go for a lovely wander. (n.b. — if you are trying to locate this wood, use the satellite view on the map and it will become clear where it is!)
