I’ve always been a fan, enjoying the odd one off night in the bar downstairs, and a wee bite to eat. But it wasn’t until meeting the lovely Rachel C for an evening bite that I realised their secret weapon. Now, this is something that I don’t think I’ve ever ordered before — not just here — but in general. I just can’t recall. I’ll go a lasagne, burger, sandwich and so on any day. But… A salad?! Never! Just not the thing that gets my tastebuds excited, however, having had a large lunch I wanted a light dinner and the goats cheese salad seemed appealing somehow. My. Word. Don’t underestimate that bad boy, it’ll take you buy surprise, and rub it in your face when you can’t finish a plate of the lovely lovely goodness. Let me explain: You get a full bowl of leaves. The plate is packed with salad, fresh, crisp and bouncy, and delicately drizzled with a thick balsamic. Then come the plentiful tomatoes, cucumbers, and other such little healthy treats. And the final bit of boom is the goats cheese and pine nuts. Huge thick slices of the creamiest, tastiest cheese you could wish for. It was delectable! So, you know the rest. Dare’s an ace spot for coffees, snacks, lunch, dinner, and has an excellent meal deal.(Two for one on early bird — which means you can be paying as little as four quid for dinner.) But the secret to this spot? That goats cheese salad, man. It’s game changing.

Apart from the occasional coffee-n-go at Costa, I’ve only ever been to one café in Headingley. Maybe it’s just because I live just down the road and it seems a bit silly or extravagant, but I’ve never really seen the point. When one of my besties still lived on Cardigan Road however, and both of our houses were in a state of dishevelled chaos(we’d been out drinking the night before, there was no way we were spending Saturday morning cleaning with those hangovers!) it was suggested that we go get some quick brekkie from Dare. I’d heard great things about this place, and I was intrigued by the cosy setting and the pretty photos on the bare-brick walls. Prices seemed reasonable, so I thought why not? The servers here are lovely, which is definitely appreciated when all you want is sympathy for your self inflicted headache. i needed bread, I needed grease, I needed salt and dairy and stodge. I got a delicious blend of all of these when I ordered a bacon, brie and cranberry salad sandwich on ciabatta bread, washed down with a glass of fresh orange juice. This place is great for ear-wigging on people’s conversations, so if you plan on having a doozy of a break-up talk with your soon to be ex or have some salacious gossip to share, then you might want to go someplace else! Lovely setting, gorgeous food, awesome prices. Very pleased all round :)

I highly recommend Dare. It is one of my favourite places to eat in Leeds and previously being a Headingly resident, it was a popular frequent of mine. I went here recently and forgot how much I loved it. I have been here so many times and never had a bad experience with staff nor food. The food is delicious and is a good mix of Mexican and Italian with pizzas, pastas and salads, all reasonably priced and decent sized portions(they also don’t scrimp on sour cream and guacamole which is important with Mexican food!). They do breakfast, lunchtime and teatime deals but even without the offers its not very costly, three of us went recently and each had a main, dessert and a bottle of wine to share and it was less than £20 each which I think is excellent considering the quality of the food and the generous portions. The staff are really friendly and the atmosphere is great. The place is split over three floors with the top two being full of tables and the bottom a small little basement bar which is very cool, small but feels like you’re having drinks at an upmarket house party which I personally enjoyed! Overall I would very much recommend it. The ONLY downside I would say is if you have to sit at the back table by the kitchen but only because it isn’t as fun as sat by the window people watching, BUT you’re still having delicious food so you get over it! My personal favourite dish. the chicken burrito(you won’t regret it)

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this place yet, I come here so often. Ever since the day I moved to Leeds and these guys served me with the HUGEST bowl of nachos I’ve ever seen, I’ve been a fan. Number one reason for coming here: the food. It is cheap. Portions are large. The choice is wide. And it’s really nice! Mexican? Tasty. Pizza? Good. Breakfast? Yummy, and served on a rather cool platter. Sandwiches? Awesome. Desserts? Oh my god you guys the desserts. Admittedly I ALWAYS get the pecan pie because it’s amazing, but friends assure me that the other desserts are good too. They do Illy coffee as well, which is one of the best coffee brands outside Italy in my opinion. Number two reason for coming here: the atmosphere. It’s pretty cool. It’s a teensy bit crowded, but the surroundings are nice and you can watch people go past through the big window. Actually I rely on this place so utterly for my hangover/rainy day needs I really want to give it 5 stars, but there is the minor downside that service is a little hit and miss and you might have to wait a while for your goodies. Wow, I almost feel disloyal saying that: can you tell I really really like this place? (PS: There’s a bar downstairs too. It’s a little bit weird and small, with no windows — feels a bit like going to a party in someone’s basement flat. The barstaff are friendly though, and it’s not a bad place to go for one or two before you move on elsewhere.)

Dare café is one of my favourite places to go in Leeds. The food is consistently good and I’ve never had a bad experience here. The menu has a good range of foods from your usual café fodder of sandwiches and snacks to pasta and pizza dishes and mexican dishes too. They also have some excellent deals — lunchtime specials and afternoon dessert offers. And all at a really reasonable price too! I went for lunch this week with two friends, we had three mains, five drinks and a dessert and it only came to £21! I had the nachos with beef chilli and it was so tasty — I’m always nervous when I order nachos that they’ll skimp on the guacamole, but mine was the perfect ratio of tortilla chips to toppings! It can get quite busy at peak times but it’s usually not too big a wait and there’s an upstairs area too, so don’t get put off if you peek in the window and all the downstairs tables are taken.

Dare has been around for years(even when I was a student). I have just re-discovered it and it’s still a great place. The Burritos are great but the menu is pretty extensive and great value. Definitely worth a try and it won’t break the bank!

I have only been to Dare a few of times, and it is a very popular restaurant/café that many students flock to from both Headingley and Hyde Park. I have been for a couple of birthday meals, and it is not a bad place for them! It’s not overly expensive, and they do have promotional deals on frequently to wind the students back in, time and time again. The atmosphere hasn’t always been friendly in there, in my opinion. Despite the downstairs being very intimate, I have found myself being given the evil, as the two girls across the room suspect me and my mate of eavesdropping(we really couldn’t have cared less what they were talking about!). I find the staff can range from very friendly, to incredibly rude and impatient, no doubt owing to the hoards of rowdy folk that must come through their doors, especially as it gets into the evening. The food is basically mexican, or pizza, and I am never one to turn my nose up at either, so food-wise, it suits me fine! The portion sizes are fairly large, so for the price, it really is worth it! But I must say, I think I prefer going in a larger group, than just as a duo.

I don’t often eat far from the city centre at lunchtime, but when I do — I’ll give my friend Jacko a call, a Leeds resident for much longer than me, he knows the studenty suburbs like the back of his hand. It was he who introduced me to Dare a while back and I’ve been going back ever since. It is popular and sometimes you do have to wait, but quite simply put: it’s worth it. The price is right — it’s certainly not expensive and the surroundings, certainly in the downstairs bar, provide an intimate settings. While we don’t get intimate, Jacko goes for the burrito every time. And who am I to disagree. In fact, who are you to disagree…

Dare café certainly feels like the classiest café to get your lunchtime eats in Heagindley. Bare brick walls with local artists’ works hanging, sleek glass exterior, cool little tables and chairs — it’s nicer than any of its competitors, and it knows it. The food, like the interior, is also head and shoulders above the competition. The nachos are a definite highlight, but it is arguably the salads which make Dare a stand-out eatery. A choice of Mediterranean mixtures that all go down a treat(especially when you choose to add extra ingredients) have rightly given Dare the reputation of being the best place to grab lunch in Headingley. One word of warning, however — the place gets very busy at peak times and the tables are rather crammed on top of one another, so if you’re after somewhere to seduce, or even have an important conversation, I’d give it a miss.

Really cost effective café, and the food is good. It’s usually quite busy but is obvious to see why.

I still can’t decide if I like this place or not. I’ve been several times and every time I change my mind. The food is good, wholesome and good value for money. The portion sizes are good too. On an evening the service seems to be better than on the lunchtime. Generally staff are more attentive then, but this may just be because of how busy the place is. I’ve been twice on a lunchtime and the service wasn’t good. On one occasion I was told that the soup was tomato, but in fact it was spicy tomato so hot I couldn’t drink it. And wasn’t very nice at all. On the other occasion, being a lone diner I was largely ignored and had to flag down passing staff to take my order, brign a drink, take the plate. The whole lunch took about 1 ½ hours. But you go again, and it’s different. They jury’s out on this one so far!

I love this place for a catch up with my friends. It has great lunchtime deals on. The white chocolate mocha is a must!!! It’s sexy alright! The food at night is good too, I love the mexican chicken burrito that they do with rice, sour cream and salsa. Really fills you up and not dear at all. Really nice relaxed atmosphere and a cool dinky little bar downstairs which would be great for a romantic drink or just somewhere to chat when the hustle and bustle of headingley gets too loud! Great little find, I love it!

Fantastic deals! Buy One Get One Free on main meals, early bird all drinks £1 — well worth a trip. Even without the deals it’s great value and the food is magnificent. Mexican food as well as pizzas are on the menu, but there is a good choice of meals. Bread of the Day always seems to be ciabatta, but I’m not complaining!

Great place! Really good, cheap food, and a great atmosphere. There’s a good range of Italian and Mexican food, as well as sandwiches and soups. There’s also a great little bar downstairs, which still seems to be relatively undiscovered by the Student hoardes of Headingley. Really cool little chilled place with good music. I don’t think it’s advertised from the outside, so people just think it’s a restaurant, but just go in the door, go straight ahead and down the stairs. Love it!

I used to work here too! I love Dare. It’s fun, tasty, cosy, friendly, funky and not too pricey. The staff can be a bit hit and miss, as sometimes you get a mardy one but then other times you’ll get someone lovely and dead friendly, so it’s a bit of a gamble in that respect, but in terms of good food in a nice atmosphere, 10⁄10 every time. Love it. The food during the day ranges from breakfasts(served in the fajita griddles — fancy!), to the famous ‘soup and a sandwich’, and other goodies like seasonal paninis and tasty beers, and then in the evening the menu changes to incorporate more mexican and italian food. I love their fajitas(better than Chiquitos or TGI Fridays), and their albondigas, and the pizzas(especially the quattro stagioni). PS If you fancy mexican at home and ask them nicely(and it’s not a stroppy one who answers the phone), and take a carrier bag, sometimes they’ll do takeout. Woot woot!
