As a new(ish) resident of Bramley, I have yet to try out all the surrounding take away options, but Bramley Spice is one with which I am acquainted. I tried it when I first moved here, after finishing the unpacking, my kitchen had everything in it but anything to actually eat. Exploring the area, I found this rather disappointing looking indian takeaway near Bramley Train Station. Appearances aside, I was absolutely starving. My first thought was how it is quite nice not to have a takeaway solely aimed at students. The menu is pretty much what you woud expect, the usual dishes, curries, starters, sundries etc, but like Susan, I was fairly baffled by the option of ordering a Prawn Cocktail– if truth be known, the thought made my stomach churn. Also, the list of ‘English dishes’ seemed anything but! I too had a Dhansak, and although nothing can compare to the one I used to order at my grandmothers in Nottingham, it wasn’t too bad. Expecting a less than inspiring curry when I first entered, the man who served me was pleasant, and the curry I left with was almost as so. I wouldn’t make it my local, but it’s fine if you’re in the area.

I’m not quite sure what it says about our culinary accomplishments as a nation when the ‘English dishes’ section of an Indian takeaway menu features donner kebab and chicken tikka, but I don’t think it’s good. That aside, Bramley Spice is a decent curry joint with a pretty big selection of meat and vegetarian dishes and a few idiosyncratic additions like prawn cocktail. The portions are generous and the prices cheap, with the stuffed mushroom starter and vegetable dhansak both coming highly recommended. I don’t know anyone who’s tried prawn cocktail Indian style yet, but please let me know if you do.
