We popped here for a celebratory meal on Friday night and I think we can happily say mission accomplished, we made the right choice after looking at a number of places in the area. The plan wasn’t to get super fat, but my wife and myself did go for 3 courses each which meant we almost had to be carried out of the place due to extreme tastiness and gluttony — it was all just so tasty! First off I had the crab lasagne to start which was fantastic, very light and delicate and something I was really pleased to experience(£9.95). After looking at the menu in depth I actually circumnavigated a number of traditional bites like the lamb and pork to have the burger — but it was a really good decision as it was as juicy as anything and the chips were some of the best I’ve ever had. Sticky Toffee pud rounded this up — and washed down with a lovely Sauvignon Blanc and a pint of Tim Taylor Landlord made this the perfect night and meal. I’d highly recommend checking this place out.

I could not give it 5 out of 5 stars for one reason only, it is expensive! Otherwise, the quality of the food is outrageous. This is top gourmet food at a pub as it gets. The beer and wine list is outstanding and the service is as well. Make sure to reserve a table, otherwise long wait. Try the fish and chips. it’s the best in all of England.

Been there for a meal this evening, What a great place. Ordered a pint of Black Sheep, and then their ‘signature’ starter dish, ‘Moneybags’ Filo pastry formed into an old fashioned ‘moneybag’ tied at the top, and filled with good chunks of white fish, Salmon, and prawn. Nice sauce surrounding it, possibly a bit mushroomy, certainly that colour. One of the most enjoyable starters Ive had in 140 or so posts. I stayed with fish for the main as a Sea Bass dish was on the specials board. This too was excellent, served on a bed of spinach with a pureed root veg, carrots, bacon dressed asparagus, and a poached quails egg. Bill was a bit heavy at £27, but I thought worth every penny. Another one which I will return to. Quandary next time Im in the area, go back here or go to the Malt Shovel at Brearton(see my recent review). Theres another with a good reputation nearby, the Bluebell at Arkendale, maybe try that one first. Last visted it in the 70’s when I lived in the area. Edit, Visited again tonight 6th Feb 2012. JUst had to have the Moneybags starter again. The sauce wasnt mushroom this time, it was more like a thick Lobster Bisque. Absolutley delicious. Chicken and Leek Pie for main. Tasty and enjoyable, but chicken rather chopped up too small, and very little leek. Pint of excellent Taylor Landlord. These two courses were undr a special deal heading ‘Simple Supper’ so it only cost me £15 + £3.20 for the beer. Im still happy to give 5 stars, despite the small quibble on the pie.

My magic carpet ride is off again. Let’s keep it as pretty as a picture and head to Ferrensby. Now I know Yorkshire very well. My jobs have meant I’ve needed too. In fact I pride myself on my Yorkshire knowledge so Ferrensby is a quaint village just outside of Harrogate. It’s picturesque to the extreme and I need no encouragement in going there. The General Tarleton is an old coaching inn there and suits the area very well indeed. There are beams galore, stone work and yet another all round country feel to it. It really is the perfect venue for the location. For the food it has a reputation for it’s fresh seafood and rightly so. If you like your fish then you really would be advised to try it out. All of the ingredients it uses are fresh and of the highest quality though, so any meal you choose shouldn’t disappoint. They also do special dining deals if you stay over so it is well worth looking into that. Yet another hoorah for the countryside, nice work.

This was once the sister hotel/restaurant to The Angel at Hetton. It has both a Restaurant and a Brasserie as well as offering accomodation. Whilst being a slight notch down in quality from The Angel it is still an excellent place to eat, with good food abailable and very pleasant accomodation. The feel is of a country inn with beams in the bar and a cosy restaurant. Cooking is modern contemporary and it’s pretty decent value although not in the budget catagory. Private functions are also possible here(I attended a Californian wine dinner). Previous owner Denis Watkins(who sadly passed away in 2004) was an obsessive but down-to-earth mad buff who loved to put on wine events. Present owners John and Clare Topham have continued Denis’s tradition of offering quality food at a reasonable price.
