Many years ago, I lived in Houston for 6 months. I was 14 years old. Paul’s was a common stop for my friends and I. To this day, I prefer them to any other fish and chips shop at which I have ever eaten at home here in the US, or abroad. The Fish was always fresh, the chips fresh cut, the batter was always perfectly cooked– crispy, but not overly so. The chips were never burned. My every experience there was consistently excellent. I remember one day, feeling homesick, I ordered the«hamburger» from their menu. This resulted in much amusement from my local friends when I was surprised to watch the patty battered and deep fried, then wrapped up in newspaper the same as the fish had been! This was not the first Fish and Chips shop I’d ever tried, and I won’t claim the food was better than Harry Ramsden’s, but because of the full experience, I will always prefer Paul’s.

There is nothing wrong with Paul’s but he failed to reach the top of Chippy Excellence. I will supply the answer how this can be achieved, it is the one common denominator of all great chippies. When you walk in, is the guy standing in front of the fryer, an old guy of Mediterranean descent who looks like he grew up wearing the white coat and cap that he is currently bedecked in. He probably knows most of the folks that wander into the shop and there is the possibility that he may knew you after a couple months of visits. Paul’s does not have an old guy, so he serves good fish, not great fish.

I really like this chip shop. Great fish and chips(and other items too of course) and yummy pizzas. There’s never too long to wait — even at busy times — and the food has always been excellent. There’s a cash machine and small co-op situated beside Paul’s so you can nip off and get your carry-out while you’re waiting for your food to be cooked. Friendly staff, reasonable prices. Kids portions are great value for money.
