Spice is an Indian Restaurant opened down the street from Sharods, which is another Indian Restaurant. Together they help make Barkingside High Street what it is; basically a mish-mash of nonsense that after about every three shops has an Indian Restaurant. I heard a rumour that the owner of Sharods left in a rage and opened up Spice. I hear another rumour that the owner of Sharods owns both of them. I heard another story that a disgruntled waiter from sharods who was secretly rich decided to open up Spice in retaliation. What rumour is true, I don’t know. It’s possible my friends just have wild imaginations. Anyways, I went through the normal routine of looking at the menu, trying to work out the difference between ‘Chicken Tikka’, ‘Chicken Tikka Dansak’ and ‘Persian Chicken Tikka’. I had no idea so ordered all three. The food here was okay. It was fine. But it didn’t stand out as completely amazing to me, although I did love the Nan bread. But then everyone always loves the Nan bread. My problem was that this place just doesn’t *feel* like a restaurant. It feels like a converted shoe-shop or something; just plain walls in a plain room, where they’ve painted it white and thrown a load of chairs and tables in. It feels more like a school dinner than a restaurant. It’s void of personality. On a more positive note; the staff are great. Very friendly and welcoming — and they even treated us to a little Cadburys chocolate selection box, EACH! Hell yeah. That deserves an extra star alone. This place is still in its infancy, still starting out — so I don’t want to be too critical; it’s going to improve I’m sure.
