I came here because I was short on cash and in need of anything to fill my stomach, so for £3.50 I managed to get myself a rather generous portion of cod and chips. It wasn’t amazing, but fish and chips never really is. The chips had been sat in the pan for an uncertainly long amount of time, as had the fish. I was happy with it though, the fish was actually really quite nice. The only thing I found weird about Ramsbottom’s was that everybody working was Chinese, but then who said only the English know how to make fish and chips.

«I want the biggest bit o’ battered cod ya do please. None o’ this southern shandy rubbish!!» This is what my good friend Jack practically shouted across the counter in his thick Derbyshire accent on my last trip to Ramsbottoms. At first I thought this was going to make things a little awkward or embarrassing, but no. The man behind the fryer looked Jack straight in the face and gave as good as he got. He then produced a piece of battered cod that was over a foot in length and a mountain of chips that the two of us would have struggled to finish. It was at that point that we realised that we were going to be visiting this place again. This is a chip shop of the old school selling delicious high quality fish and chips fried to perfection. With seating inside, a couple of benches outside and of course the choice to take away, it has all you could want from a fish and chip shop. Needless to say you should be careful with what you order. Not everyone is going to want the mountain of oil soaked carbohydrates that we consumed that day. But it’s good to know that you still can in a town where fish and chips has been taken out of the realm of cheap food and added to the tourist experience with a price tag unbecoming of its station. The service is fast and friendly and the prices are great too, I seem to remember being full for well under five pounds. Let’s not make this place a daily treat though.

Fish and chips can be annoyingly expensive in some places but at Ramsbottoms, they are un-believably reasonable and taste fantastic. Located on the busy Blatchington Road, the chippy itself is quite a big place with plenty of room to sit in and eat your lunch. They have loads of special lunch deals on the go such as medium cod and chips for £3.40 or(my choice) skate wings and chips for £3.70
