Going to Halseys for Sunday brunch or a hot roast meat sandwich on a Saturday was always something we enjoyed, until a few weeks ago when our Sunday brunch experience was terrible due to the poor service we received. We wrote a review on here detailing our experience and the owner quickly responded to our review apologising. He stated that they had had some staffing issues but commented that wasn’t an excuse for the dreadful service we had encountered and assured us he would be dealing with the issues raised. Everyone can have a bad day and so last week we decided to give Halseys one last try for Sunday lunch. What a difference! The service we received was welcoming and efficient, exactly as it should be. Hopefully our previous disappointing trip was a one-off and issues have been resolved and all our future visits will be as lovely as the last. If you do go for Sunday brunch I recommend both the delicious goats cheese omelet and the really excellent bubble and squeak!

Expensive delicatesen that has been in Hitchin for years until it had to close temporarily a few years ago for hygiene reasons. Everything is expensive in here and I am not sure the quality matches the prices. OK for a cup of tea in their coffee shop though.

Halseys is a very special shop. YOu can buy everything from locally grown fruit and veg to different delicacies from around the world. Every weekend you can buy a hot roast roll, usually pork with lashings of apple sauce, or you can sit in the little tea room and have fab tea and cake

This is the type of shop that makes Hitchin unique. Halsey’s opened a few years ago as a delicatessan on the market square and over the past year or so they have opened a café. They also now sell locally produced, organic fruit and vegetables. The smell of the Spit Roast Pork is apparent as one strolls past and can’t help but stop an place an order. The café is well equipped with an extremley exciting menu from home made beans on toast to home made quiche and salad — both of which are delicious. The staff always have smiles on their faces and are a pleasure to do business with.

A very different kind of shop and it’s the pride of Hitchin town centre. It’s situated just off the market place and at first glance it seems to be a very fine delicatessen(which indeed it is). But what makes it unique is that it specialies in local produce and will actually buy stock from locals(grown in allottments or gardens) for sale in the shop — what a fantastic concept and very much in line with the spirit of the age. The window displays are particularly mouth-watering and truly enticing, the staff very friendly and the produce always of the highest quality. It’s not cheap but what it sells is well worth paying the extra for.

Places like this are what make hitchin town individual. I love it. They will buy/trade with locals who grow their own fruit & veg which is fab!

For any of you foddies out there, this is the place to go. They have a great selection of meats, cheeses, pickles, and all the usual deli items. But the best bit about this place is their café. It is quite small, and very popular so there is often a queue for a seat. However, it is well worth the wait. Their hot meat sandwiches are to die for, and at around £3.50 won’t break the bank. They are served with a side salad and homestyle crisps, so it is like a proper meal. I also love their posh ceese on toast, which is melted Brie, on thick slices of breadyummy. Even their coffees are great. The inside is decorated in a retro style, ice cream colours and there is even a cute bunting around the doors. The best café in Hitchin by far.
