The zoology building is from 1923 and the museum has a rather eclectic mixture of exhibits, live, preserved and modelled. oh, and there’s a table football machine for some reason! If you’ve ever wanted to come face to face with a giant penguin, this is the place to do it. Like snakes? You’ll have a whale of a time here. spot the real tree frogs who are nattily camouflaged in their tank, see how big tarantulas actually are, and wonder what the pickled/preserved things are before reading the label. The building could almost be showing the evolution of museums over time; some of the old cases remind me of Victorian style exhibitions, the display in the middle reminds me of Kelvingrove as it used to be and then the live things are quite ‘Amazonia’ like. I think it would be a good place to come and sketch, and also kids would have a fun time for a while if you happened to be looking for something to do on a rainy day. It’s weird, but in a good way!

I went to Glasgow Uni for four years and I didn’t notice this place until 2014, eight years after I’d graduated! It’s hidden away inside the Zoology department but is open to the public Monday to Friday. The museum one large room full of taxidermy, insects, birds, shells, coral and lots of other things. Like a giant sea turtle suspended from the ceiling. There are also a few live specimens so look out for those. I can imagine this being a great setting for a B movie about an escaped tarantula. It does look and feel like nothing has changed since the 50s! Definitely an interesting place for a look around if you’re nearby or visiting the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery and of course if you have an interest in natural history.
