I have heard many stories off the Dolphin over the years, but it was not till very recently as part of the Subcrawl that I actually managed to visit. For those who don’t know already. This is a bar frequented by the Green ½ of Glasgow. On the walls there is pictures of Jock Stein and Henrik Larsson. On match days I would imagine it will be absolutely packed. The thing that struck me most about the place was how friendly the locals were. Ten of us trooped in having just been soaked by the usual Glaswegian summer weather. None of the regulars batted an eye at our entry and in fact several engaged in a bit of banter and chat with us. The bar is quite small, but the beer is good and the atmosphere seemed quite friendly. I would be happy to go back for another visit in the future.

If you’re doing the Subcrawl, and have survived the District and the Lord Nelson, this is what you’ll be dreaming of when you leave those places. It’s definitely a Celtic pub — the portrait of Jock Stein, and the take on Henrik Larsson meeting God hanging over the bar certainly indicate that — but, and it’s a big but — it’s not overtly and violently Celtic. Indeed, it was 2 or 3 times before I realised that it was a Celtic pub. It’s a wide mix of folk, all of whom are welcoming and ready with a quip or a one liner to several soggy folk who have walked in. I can’t speak for other people’s drinks, but my pint of Guinness was absolutely beautiful, one of the best I’ve had in the city, I would say. I vaguely remember having this discussion with someone, but I think this is one of the better«fitba» pubs you could visit. If you’re a Celtic fan, great, you’ll love it — if you’re not? You’ll probably just roll your eyes a little and then forget all about it as you drink your damn fine pint of Guinness. One of my favourite places to go in Glasgow, I must make a point of visiting more than I do.

This is a Celtic pub, but not a scary one by any means. While it does cater towards a niche market — male football fans ages 40 – 60 — it’s very welcoming to those who do not fit that description. For example, I took my Mum there for a drink — she is between 40 and 60, but she is NOT male. Nevertheless, she was made to feel more than welcome. The staff are friendly and smart(often wearing a collar and tie, which I really like in a publican), the beer is served at the perfect temperature and is good value. They do a cracking pint of Guinness. Being of a Celtic persuasion, it’s a nice wee green corner of the West End, and saves me having to hoof it out to the Gallowgate to watch games and soak up atmosphere. If you are a Celtic fan, you’ll really enjoy this pub. if you’re not a Celtic fan, you’ll still enjoy it. it’s just a decent, well run, traditional boozer.

The Baird’s Bar of the west end, this place is a definite Celtic pub and a great place to watch any of the games. Now despite its football orientation its not particularly a rough pub and the locals are cheery enough if a little on the weathered side… ” sorry madam, i believed your face to be my wife’s handbag“ Decent beer, right good old characters and not by any means the roughest pub in this area. Worth a visit if your of the green persuasion.

The Dolpin is one of the biggest Celtic pubs in the city; so much so, in fact, one must queston whether or not it really was founded in 1888, as it claims on the door. Despite not being a Celtic fan myself, this is still a very welcoming little place and one of the better pubs in this stretch of Partick. While it’s probably best to avoid on match days if you’re not particularly interested, at other points in the week it’s definitely a reasonable option for a pint.

The Dolphin is an amazing welcoming little pub, right opposite Kelvinhall underground. Everything it lacks in size, it definitely makes up in personality. Martin, the long time owner of The Dolphin, is brilliant, and always welcomes a new face with a smile, and a cold drink. So, the beer is cold, the people are great, and it’s strategically placed. What more could you want?
