I’M OLDGREEEEEEGGGGGGGGS! Okay, that’s not *quite* what Noël Fielding’s character of the same name said on The Mighty Boosh but it’s what I hear in my head every time I pop into Britain’s fave super baker, Greggs. A few years ago I was ALL about the Greggs cheese & onion pastie. That is all I had ever tried from here & it was good; occasionally hotter-than-the-sun-can’t-feel-my-tongue but still pretty tasty. Then I discovered the sausage roll ~ ooh, you filthy beast you! Sometimes now when I pop into Greggs it’s there, looking at me, tempting me into it’s flaky, slightly greasy, shell… ooh, you little porky devil! Served HOT these sausage rolls are my favourite out of all the portable, eat-on-the-go, rolled meats covered in flaky pastry type ‘snacks’. When times have been hard one of these has sufficed as a quick lunch and even on the odd occasion, when feeling super flush it has been a ‘side’ or if you like, sausage chaser(ey-up!) to my Greggs sandwich of choice. Talking bread-based food items the sandwiches here are usually pretty good. Everything is made fresh on site & made up that morning so it is very rarely you will encounter a dry, stale Greggs sandwich. Fillings-wise my faves are the Tuna Crunch, & Chicken New Orleans. They also serve baguettes & rolls with the same fillings & also a few extra. My baguette star is usually a simple, yet effective ham & cheese. It’s very popular in that France you know. Greggs also does a fine line in sweet thangs. I could be here forever(almost) listing all their sugar-laden delights so instead I will tell you about my Top Three Greggs Sweet Thangs: 1st up is their cute little cup/fairy cakes. You can usually buy these in a pack of 4 and they have rings on them sometimes(the Halloween ones are the best!). The cake itself is always really moist & the icing is really lovely. The ring is frankly just a bonus, well that is if you are blessed(?) with having the teeny tiny hands of a child. I’m guessing they are meant for children but whatever. Kids today, too busy playing on their mobile telephones to wear daft wee plastic, bat-shaped rings. Bah. Anyway, sweet treat #2 is the delicious(and rare) cream filled fudge doughnut. Yum. This usually sells out pretty quickly and many-a-time have a scoured the Greggs of Glasgow in search of one of these little beauties. If you see one snap it up; it’s delicious. My third choice is my latest discovery: The Caramel & Pecan Greggsnut. Oh. My. This caught my eye when I was in one morning for a coffee; the name just lured me in & I have to say it was better than I expected ~ a yummy half donut/half crossiant iced ‘Greggsnut’(ouch, poor Gregg!) topped with pecans & filled with a gorgeous caramel sauce. SOGOOD. From here now on I thoroughly blame Greggs for any significant weight gain over the next coming months. The other surprisingly good thing about the big G is their coffee. It’s no Avenue G/Artisan Roast but when in need of a decent cup o’Joe that’s reasonably priced on your way to work then Greggs does the job. They offer Americanos, cappuccino, latte and espresso. In the morning they do a Breakfast deal of a sausage/bacon roll & any coffee for £2. Also they have a similar coffee & cake one too also for £2. They also also do gift cards. So if you know someone that is partial to a Steak Bake or Yum-Yum why not give them a cheeky wee gift card for their upcoming birthday. Mmmm… unlimited cakes, sandwiches & hot pastry treats up to the amount of £20 ~ Greggs, you are really spoiling us! Only bad thing I have to say about Greggs(and the reason they don’t get 5 stars) is that in this shop(and pretty much every one) their items sell out SO quickly and they don’t really replace them. Many a-time I have popped in at 10:30am in search of a donut or certain sandwich and they don’t have any left. This sucks. I know it’s to keep their wastage down but when time after time we go in looking for a particular thing(the cream-filled fudge donut) & they don’t have it it would be nice for them to realise that certain things are more popular therefore maybe stock more next time? It’s not healthy but then they’re not pretending to be so. Just nice, honest, tasty bakery-style food. The tagline for Greggs should be: Greggs: go on, you know you want to…

I love Greggs, I just can’t deny it, and this one was in too handy a location for me when I was at uni or popping to my friend’s flat nearby for a study ‘break’. At lunch time I cant resist the chicken mayo big soft bite. Sometimes I absolutely crave it! At only £1.95 it is a bargain compared to the packed sandwiches you get elsewhere which aren’t half as tasty or filling. Service is speedy too. Greggs is popular for a reason.

I’ll admit it. I was a Greggs virgin for a really long time. I didn’t see what was so appealing about a small bakery selling mostly unhealthy goods. It wasn’t long however til my curiosity got the better of me; surely the giant queues out the door and round the corner where there for a reason? So I ventured in when hunger took over and I didn’t have many pennies in my purse(I’d previously been told it was cheapest of the cheap), bought an onion pasty and never looked back. Sandwhiches, drinks, pies and pastries all reasonably priced. The queue may be out the door but the service is good and you’ll never have to wait too long. The doughnuts are so delicious, I might have to go buy one right now!
