DISAPPOINTING I’ve visited Fantoosh a few times now, most recently this afternoon-specifically for Sushi… I think a combination of it being Sunday and quite late in the afternoon that made the Sushi selection prettttttee pants!!! Him Indoors(I maaaaay have mentioned before…;-)) is highly allergic to garlic and onions-so he has to be V careful about what he eats… he looked over the(ONLY) two boxes of sushi in the fridge; there were nigiri in one that were suitable and suitable maki in the other… he asked if it were possible to combine the suitable parts of both-it wasn’t…and the answer from the staff member was a bit«meh»… He then asked if it was possible to order the suitable maki/nigiri to be put in a box, in advance-it wasn’t(he would’ve bren VERY happy to pay over the odds for it, too, he’s just fostered a COMPLETE sushi-obsession!!!) It seemed to me like the girl just wanted to shut up shop… fair do’s, everyone wants to get home from work, but the customers shouldn’t know that’s how you’re feeling lol!!! I thought that late on, they’d be a bit more flexible in mixing the boxes etc as they’d prob need to chuck the stuff out at closing… apparently not! :-/ The other times I’ve been in the staff has been a LOT more helpful and I’ve always bought a few bits. It also has to be said the selection of fish etc. available is wide and well varied… these are the only reasons I’m not giving a lower star rating!

I’d popped in here a while back and spied they did sushi, but I’ve never made it back to actually try it. Seeing as they didn’t have any sausage rolls at Cottonrake I headed here — they had a few ready-made packets of sushi for £3.95 which is a pretty great price compared to supermarket options. The box I got came with 2 x California rolls of salmon, 4 x maki(salmon, cucumber, avocado and tuna) and 2 x nigiri of salmon and tuna(as well as soy, pickled ginger and the Devil’s food, wasabi). I love how the California rolls are really large with a small amount of rice around the outside — the piece of salmon was huge! The fish was amazingly fresh and delicious and was the highlight for me. I didn’t think the rice tasted great though, which is why this is only a 4 star review. It was a bit too bitey and a bit bland like it hadn’t been seasoned. This wouldn’t stop me from buying the packets again, as generally I don’t really like to eat a lot of sushi rice and prefer the fish. If they did sashimi boxes I would be in heaven! It was a good sized portion which would be suitable for lunch or a light dinner.
