Totally agree with the other 5 star reviews… Such a cool selection of magazines, you won’t find anywhere else. They have so many useful little things, great for stationery goodies or stamps, cards and chocolates.

This newsagent carries a nice array of magazines. My all time favourite is Frankie mag from Australia. They also carry Monocle which is another fav but I buy it less often. Also popped in here for a permanent marker that I needed. Everyone is always nice and helpful.

A 5 star newsagents? It does exist, and it’s here in Glasgow. Thanks to Kelly R’s tip the other day, I found out they sell Frankie magazine here(thanks again Kelly!). Frankie is an Australian magazine which I was totally addicted to, back in the day. I didn’t know it was even sold in the UK so when I saw the tip I screamed(I’m not kidding), and visited Barrett as soon as I could. As I scanned the shelves, and scanned them some more, I came to the crushing realisation that they didn’t seem to have it. The girl behind the counter was super helpful, looking it up on the system for me and chatting to me about the magazine. Sadly, it had sold out already but she offered to take my name so that for all future copies, they’ll have one for me. How’s that for customer service?! She was super helpful and friendly, and I really appreciate that she offered to go that extra mile for me. Even though I don’t live close to Barrett, I’ll be heading here for all my magazine needs in the future.

I love these places. Glasgow Convenience Stores You can tell when you enter one of these that you are back in Scotland. Askit powders by the register and Irn Bru in the fridge. This one is great and I used to drop by on my walk to work. It carries a variety papers, bottled waters, loads of gingers, and all of the miscellany that I would require during my day. Sometimes, it is not the big things that remind you of a place. You can take an immense amount of pleasure in the small things.

Barrett is where I stop by on the way to Hillhead subway for a quick newspaper and soft drink. It is much preferable to the awful RS McColl on the other side of the street with its extortionate chain prices. Barrett gets the thumbs up from me for the local newspapers and cute Glasgow memorabilia it sells.

A West End institution, Barretts has been selling papers, pens and envelopes to Wendies since the days of King Charles II trotting down Byres Road. In fact, legend has it he nipped in for an Evening Times, a Curly Wurly and a scratch card himself. Undoubtedly the best thing about the independently run newsagent, and the reason for its longevity, is its consideration for its customers. Appreciating that much of the passing trade comes from across the country, given the close proximity of Glasgow University, the shop has always stocked an extensive range of local papers, giving many a little slice of home they would struggle to get elsewhere. If they do not have a particular local rag you are looking for, just ask and they’ll do their best to order it in. Despite being forced to downsize from two premises two years ago, the shop’s popularity has arguably soared in that time, primarily because it has never rested on its laurels. As well as the usual newsagenty things, Barretts’ stationary section has saved many a student upon the realisation they’re heading to an exam without a pen, while the recent range of in-house West End merchandise has been a stroke of genius and underlined the relationship it has with the area. The«I Love Glasgow» bags in particular proved to be a popular Christmas present for many.

A quick look in your Glasgow dictionary under the title ‘Newsagent’ will find you a nice wee photo of this place. In search of a magazine/newspaper that’s on the market just now? Then a quick visit here will provide you with what your in search of. Add to this a fine collection of stationary goods, drinks and snacks and you have yourself a good store. With friendly and helpful staff its a place that will see you pop back again and again.

Since downsizing a few years ago this shop has still remained in my good-books despite the magazine selection being more limited(although still healthy) than when they had more display space. Offering all the usual newsagents stock, sweets, juice, papers, gum etc, Barretts also has a wide selection of stationary and many an hour have been wasted Umming and Ahhing over my writing weapon of choice come exam time. Friendly staff, some of whom have been working there since my childhood, and fair prices, this is one of the most pleasant newsagents on offer in the area and is a classic on the Byres road scene ready to fulfill all your calendar/pen/paper/irn bru buying needs.
