Named after British Radical and Liberal statesmen, Richard Cobden, the Cobden pub in Woolton is a tremendously likeable kind of watering hole. Just don’t ask me why it’s named after him. Maybe he had his first kiss there. It might have been the torrential rain battering the outside world that kept me here or the fact the quiz machine kept paying out but in my memory I stayed mostly because I liked the pub so much. It was agreeable in all the right ways, like that friend of a friend everybody has and will one day be blessed by a return visit from me. Lucky Cobden.

Small local in the centre of Woolton village, also known as the Cobden Vaults. The pub has a single bar and an open plan layout with several different drinking areas, all done out in a bright if unremarkable decorative scheme(apparently, it used to be very faux-villagey with horse brasses). It serves decently-kept real ale, and clearly has a loyal, local customer base. Staff also seemed friendly, although it all seemed a bit lacking in atmosphere overall on my visit. An oddity was a fold-away gaming table laid out in one area(with another folded up against the wall), with a small but enthusiastic group of poker players. When they have two tables out, it must seem quite a joint
