I had my first experience of The Raj tonight, and have mixed feelings as ¾ of my party thought the food was quite interesting or good. So maybe it was just me making a poor choice in the chicken tikka masala. I know it’s not exactly a traditional dish, but usually it can be relied upon to be quite flavorful. In this case it was 5 or 6 smallish pieces of chicken(not even tandoorI grilled), floating in a tasteless watery tomato sauce. In the menu it is described as «Le Raj’s rebirth of Britain’s favorite dish, made with beetroot, tomatoes, saffron, almonds, fresh coconut and cream». Well honestly I have to say that I cannot believe this is what I was served, it really was like a few pieces of chicken dunked in a bottle of cheap sauce from Sainsburys. No hint of beetroot, coconut or almond, certainly no texture, the sauce had been food processed to death. I was probably just unlucky in my choice as my dining companions food apparently tasted ok and certainly looked more interesting with visible veggies and snazzy shaped plates. If it wasn’t for that my review would be 0 – 1 star. In view of the high prices, £125 for 4, with one drink each, and a subsequent growling tummy, I would probably not be too excited about going there again.

I came here on a recommendation and whilst the food was excellent we were very disappointed with the service. The staff need to cheer up a bit and gave the impression they didn’t want to be there. We had to call a waiter over to even give our order. Whilst the food could not be faulted, we will look elsewhere for a full dining experience.

Heard good things but left feeling slightly let down. Don’t get me wrong its a great place to take your other half and on a date, good service, nice ambience, well presented. I i like my curry and did’t think the food delivered, especially as the prices are in the higher end. The food wasn’t bad in any way, but didn’t get my taste buds going as much as my cheaper local curry house does.

Le Raj has a terrific history and reputation, with film stars reportedly flying their curries across continents. Unfortunately, at a time that curry houses are raising their game and offering a greater variety of dishes and flavours, Le Raj has been standing still and been overtaken. The décor is slightly odd and out of kilter for an Indian restaurant and the split level dining area looks strange in a small dining room. The food was mediocre and I’ve had better even in the Epsom area let alone the amazing curry houses in Tooting an d Brick Lane. i would love to do an update in the future and see Le Raj regain their mojo but at the moment, they just seem to be coasting a bit on their past glories.
