out in the gyle industrial estate there isn’t much choice for lunch. i’m lucky to have a staff canteen that is usually pretty decent and also if i’m desperate there is a greggs about a two minute walk away. of course there is always the chip van, but i tend to leave that to the school kids. however, the ritz is one of the only restuarants out in the land of many many businesses and me and my other unfortunate friends to work so far out of town decided to head here for lunch. the restaurant is actually quite large and on a tuesday there was a fair number of people there having lunch. so clearly it’s well used since it’s one of the only options some people may have. there are loads of tables but i found it a bit odd that they were mostly circular which is sort of awkward for three people to sit around… not quite big enough. the place also looks a bit tired so could maybe use a sprucing up. i ordered the steak sandwich as did one of my friends, while the last ordered the fish finger sandwich. i have to say our food was brought out promptly so they obviously recognise that most people here are on business lunches. my sandwich was quite tasty although the steak was a bit fatty in places. for £6.95 it’s hard to complain as the sandwich was rather large in size and the plate as had a portion of chips and a small fresh salad. so definitely good value for money and quite tasty. the waitress we had was also super nice and friendly which is always a positive. a bit of a negative is that they have a table with all the sauces etc on it, which i find a bit wetherspoons-ish and kind of makes the place a bit cheapish. that said though my lunch was enjoyable and reasonably priced, service was good, and with so few choices near my work i’d return here.

We went for lunch, it was ok. The tables don’t really lend themselves to being arranged for lots of people as they are mostly round. We had pre-ordered at the venue’s request; the starters were good and came out quickly but the wait between courses was a bit excessive. The main courses were lukewarm and desserts appear to have been made off site as one of our party found some plastic on hers. We were only asked if we wanted drinks once, before the meal, and we weren’t approached by staff to ask if our food was ok or if we wanted any more drinks. To add insult to injury there was a 10% service charge added to our bill, despite there being no mention of this at the time of booking or in correspondance with the venue prior to the meal and having received what we agreed to be pretty poor service. This place is sat in the middle of an industrial estate and seems to cater mainly for office staff lunches and/or after work drinks. Inside it felt a bit like an office that has been turned into a canteen, except with carpet. Even the seats looked like they’d come out of an old office. Like I said, it was ok. We’ll not be back any time soon though.
