Heart of Midlothian F.C. War Memorial

It’s very sad that professional athletes gave up their lives to go and fight in the war. Like many on planet earth, I’m sick of war and fighting and killing that takes so many of our families and friends and heroes away. This puts in perspective how big the world wars were, taking so many local celebrities away from sports teams and them getting killed.
First-​Hand Experience: I’ve been to Tynecastle 4 times. but I only noticed this monument the most recent time I was in Edinburgh. I was pretty shocked, to be honest. I ended up spending 20 minutes or so just thinking about it. It didn’t sit well with me. I think maybe that is what monuments are supposed to do. To make you think about something. To remind you about something.
So this monument works, then.
The monument itself is old and beautiful and moving, but what I didn’t like is that a lot of these memorials in some ways do glorify war and it’s time we start changing our war memorials to reflect the general consensus of «never again» rather than the «necessary sacrifice» propaganda.

The memorial is to commemorate the fallen in the first world war, who were members of the Hearts F.C. team who joined en masse the now famous McCrae’s Sporting battalion. A total of seven Hearts players made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, and were joined by players from Hibernian, Raith Rovers, Dunfermline Ath., Leith Ath., and many others including those from rugby teams etc. Every year on Armistice day, players, officials, fans, & relatives, gather at the Memorial which is situated in the middle of Haymarket Junction, to pay homage to the fallen heroes who gave their tomorrows for our todays. Traffic is halted as a short service and laying of wreaths is performed. The memorial is now due to be dismantled as the city is in the process of laying tracks for a tram system, and it maybe a year or so before it is re –cited elsewhere in the area. If in town pay it a visit, whilst it is still possible.
