Just to be clear, I had lunch in the café in the modern art TWO gallery. there are probably differences between the café in gallery One and two. Compared to what you might get at a museum in the states, this was heaven. A very nice and flavorful grilled ham and cheese sandwich and a decent local beer. What more could you ask for? So really more like 3.5 stars. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here but I certainly would have lunch here after going through the galleries. Plus the art in the café is pretty cool as well. I mean the giant robot sculpture and the amazing ceiling tiles are wicked cool!

I love this gallery and come here often to enjoy the standard as well as special exhibits. I have also spent some fine sunny days on Charles Jencks’ ‘landform.’ The café has been recently refurbished and is a pleasant improvement. On warm days it is possible to eat outside in the fine and well-kept gardens that the café opens out onto. In the spring and summer a colourful flower garden is in full bloom. The food offering of the café is not vast, but adequate and attention is paid to seasonal foods. Apparently, the food is made from scratch, which I assume means in house, though I cannot vouch for this. All this is fine, but I do wish that more attention might be given to training staff to treat the customer with more courtesy. Counter service for the customer is hard enough in the winter — having to juggle self-service, winter coats and a child. Pleasant and helpful staff behind the counter would make this much easier. Unhelpful and inattentive staff make it difficult if not downright unpleasant. All in all, I am not NOT recommending this café, I am just saying that my visit today would have been very pleasant if I had been attended to with some common courtesy at the counter.
