Oh my, where do I start. I guess I shouldn’t have assumed that the«American Hot» was going to be relatively close to an American style pie. So that’s one on me, but if your going to advertise types of «American» pizzas it better at least come close to New York to Chicago style pie! Oy Vey! Swing and a miss! There was no offer of napkins or utensils for our take out. The taste was sorta wood fire but not really on target either. Parts of the pie was burnt. If your a yank needing a pie you’d be better getting a frozen from the local market. The reason for the one star was for the tiramisu. It was good.

There is something so comforting about the consistent mediocrity of a chain pizza place. The food is okay and the service is okay and it is the same where ever you go. From London to Aberdeen and everywhere in between, I’ve probably eaten in 20 Pizza Express outlets and they’ve all been the same. Not very interesting, but comforting and always a safe option. The Durham one is quite small, but nice on the inside and very conveniently located. My housemate became somewhat overexcited by the Dyson airblade hand drier things in the toilets.

Good place to eat when not too crowded, but as others have said can get busy and slow service inevitably results. Can’t comment about the students-only a few in the last time I visited but not noisy or a problem. The food is well prepared and served, as with all Pizza Express you can use Orange Wednesday 2 for 1. Beware of glass washing-I know of several people who have had issues with glasses not being washed properly, and had to send three back on a recent visit. The restaurant was not busy at the time.

I don’t get why people hype on about this place, the staff could not care les, very slow and the place was messy. Also the food was flavourless, thank god I used my deals vouchers to pay as I would have been so upset to have to pay for such poor food and service. Plus not a great range on the menu

Not exactly fine dining but you cant go wrong, the food is good and the service is good. Standard menu across all their restaurants I’ve been to around the country. Its in what I think looks like an old bank and they’ve kept a lot of original features and lovely high ceilings, rather fitting in this very old city. The only problem is being a university city it does get full of students, who can be rather loud at times. Staff are happy to help and nothing is too much bother although as said in other reviews service can be slow when busy — we try to get there early. A nice treat now and then.

The food is as you would expect from any Pizza Express restaurant in the country; it’s good Italian pasta and pizza and the desserts are great. The problem with Pizza Express in Durham is that it’s so small it becomes rather cramped when busy. This can be ok in cafes but is the wrong feel for a restaurant. When I went the service was really slow too, we had to wait for ages for a table and then wait ages for the food to come. When it arrived it was good, but that’s not the point. The staff were fairly apologetic and to be fair to them it was a busy night, but I wouldn’t call the service fabulous. It’s obviously Pizza Express prices too, which aren’t extortionate, but you can get pretty similar Italian food in Durham just down the street at La Spaghettata for just over half the price and you don’t have to wait as long for it to arrive.
