We wanted to rent a car, but not drive in London. So per suggestion of our tour book, we rented the car from Heathrow. We reserved it via Orbitz and the description /address to pick up says«in terminal», well, that wasn’t entirely the case. We were already in London, so we took the tube to go to Heathrow. Not knowing exactly where the rental car counters are, we decided to get off at the main terminals(Terminals 1,2,3). We found the rental counter and the sign says something about due to technical difficulties, they will process rental cars offsite and that customers should call this number to get picked up… oh great. Our cell phones don’t work in the UK(well, not without paying an arm and a leg), but at least there were some pay phones we could use to call. The person on the phone told us to go outside and wait at bus pick up #5(? Forgot, I think it’s 5). So off we went to wait. The first Sixt shuttle was driving past an overpass above us that has a downward ramp. The driver stopped and honked at us. My husband and I looked at each other, then at the oncoming traffic between us and the shuttle, not to mention the 5 feet wall as well. «What’s he expecting us to do?» I asked my husband. «eh… I am not sure,» he replied. «Well, I ain’t running across the traffic and scale that wall just to get a rental car!» I must have started sounding a bit hostile cause my husband used his signature«calm-the-irritated-wife-down» voice to say, «I am sure he’ll turn around and pick us up.» Well, that particular driver didn’t. But another Sixt shuttle did eventually come and picked us up the more conventional method… i.e. stopped in front of us with door open. We finally got the rental vehicle… took us about 2.5 hours since the start of our journey. We were glad we got the rental car cause the places we went were simply amazing, and we couldn’t have done it all had we not had a vehicle.
