Situated on the periphery of the dozens of other restaurants at the lively and cosmopolitan Mermaid Quay, The Spice Merchant is set in a lovely stone building, with the opposite car park a massive convenience. The Spice Merchant Cardiff has created a menu that crosses India from the north to the south and all of the different dishes, flavours and tastes of the regions. It is rare that you will find an Indian restaurant which offers sophisticated meals which are quite as authentic as this one. There is extremely friendly service, with waiters more than happy to assist on any queries one may have over the various dishes, making it easy to find a great dish you’ll enjoy. The quality of the food really is divine, and as a curry lover, i’m a big fan of this place. Deliciously authentic Indian cuisine.

As you stroll around the bay from time to time you may see a serious looking man dressed to the nines in full Indian regalia from top to tail(having said that I haven’t seen his tail) and unless you know he is the PR guy for Spice Merchant you might think he is a visiting ambassador. I will point out at this stage that if he isn’t handing out leaflets he could very well be the ambassador. So it maybe wise not to ask him if he does takeaways. I’ve been to the Spice Merchant about five times 4 of those were to sit down in the restaurant, once was for a takeaway. I’ve always liked the food and it has always been served to me by friendly welcoming staff. I wouldn’t like to commit myself to say its the best curry house in the bay as they are all good but its definitely in the top 3(there are only 3).

A very inconspicuous restaurant with a pleasing wooden interior. It is deceptive like a TARDIS as it looks like someone’s home from the exterior. The interior is spacious and well presented. I enjoy Indian food regularly, what surprised me about there menu was the simplicity which is good after a long day of work, the decision is easier. Korma is a classic choice for me I tend to avoid over the top hot so the best i’ll go for is Jalfrezi, my experience was enjoyable and I would go again but there seems to be a certain need for character that I felt was missing.

Was a bit hesitant visiting here after the mentioned flyer annoyers buzz by me every time I’m in the bay. however I was pleasantly surprised by it’s simple light wood décor and lovely food. Unfortunately I wasn’t eating in there as I was taking away and wanted to mention that here. The menu seems alot more traditional than the westernised food of other places and found it utterly delicious. It was prepared as if we were staying at the restaurant and had really quality to the food rather than the greasy take aways you can find your self with at times in other places. It’s a little more expensive than a normal take away but it very much worth it if your into your Indian food.
