You can’t miss bright purple Daiquiri’s on Salisbury road, and if you’re looking for a good, wholesome Mexican meal then stop by. The range of Mexican food is excellent and extremely tasty, although I’m not sure how good for the die-hard Mexican fan. This might go for any restaurant producing food from a certain country; how do people from that country find the food? I’m guessing that Daiquiri’s isn’t that original and is catering to western tastes, but hey, it’s good and I’m not wearing a Sombrero. Although, dressing up all Mexican for a party here would be kinda fun. The drinks are really cheap but not close to the standard of cocktail bars nearby. If you’re looking for a really well made cocktail then try Milgi in City Road, or Fat Cat in town. Definitely pay Daiquiri’s a visit for the food though, you won’t regret it. Try the Vegetarian Enchiladas, they’re moorish in the extreme.

Why, why oh why was I so arrogant about my ability to make Mexican food that I didn’t pay this place a visit until recently, despite hearing all the fantastic recommendations The menu, at first, does seem unnecessarily baffling. But, take a second to break it down and you will see 90% of the meals involve some kind of bread combined with some kind of meat or bean which is then absolutely coated in cheese and heated in some way or another. The portions are more than generous. My wrap had me satisfied after I’d polished off just half, quite an achievement on their part as I’m not normally the type to leave food. The kind people here let us take away the rest of our meal in boxes, an offer so good you can call their meals 2−4−1. URBANCHALLENGE: Persuade those on your table to order the onion tower, a mighty construction which comes with a yummy selection of dips.

Daiquiri’s is in the centre of the student land that is Cathays. Now, just because you are a restaurant that will cater predominantly for students, this shouldn’t mean that the food is made to a student standard. I found the food in here pretty expensive and if you order a chimichanga, you literally just get a chimichanga and have to pay for all the extras that normally you would get for free in any other decent Mexican restaurant. I also found the food not even that nice, now who would have thought you could go wrong with a restaurant dedicated to one cuisine. I was thoroughly disappointed as I do love Mexican food and was really excited to go here, but then again I haven’t been here for a good year or so due to my bad experience, so who knows it may have improved by now.

If you’re looking for somewhere to go with a large group of people then Daiquiri’s is brilliant, I’ve been here for a few birthdays and a good night is always had by all. There’s a very decent amount of seating in here considering the place itself isn’t that big, and if you’re intending on bringing a group and you let them know they can arrange up to 30 seats all on one long table for you(I know because we did this). The staff are really helpful here too. On one occasion we snuck a cake in for them to hide behind the bar and when we gave them the signal they brought it out, candles lit and everything, to a chorus of happy birthdays and a tearful birthday girl. That’s the sort of extra touch that’ll really endear a place to me and I’m very happy to recommend Daiquiri’s as a result. Food-wise it’s a bit different because it’s mexican but everything’s explained clearly on the menu and if you’re unsure about something you can ask when you order. The food is really good too, I’d never eaten in a mexican restaurant before I came here as I don’t really like spicy food, but I’ve always thoroughly enjoyed the meals I’ve had in Daiquiri’s and none of them have blown my tongue off yet. You order food and drinks at the bar and you pay when you order(again GREAT for large parties, saves so much hassle when it comes to paying) and you can pop up and get more drinks whenever you want be they pints or cocktails, of which there is an impressive selection. The food comes pretty much as soon as it’s ready so you may get yours a few minutes before or after your friends get theirs, but if there aren’t many of you and if you’ve ordered together then it’s normally only a minute or so before they get the rest of the meals to you. This place is very popular so it’s best to book a table in advance, but it’s definitely worth it as this is a place that’s earned its reputation for good food and good service. Even if you’ve never been to a mexican before you should try here at least once, it really is brilliant.

This colourful, fun little independent restaurant is loud, laid-back, well-priced and offers all the classic Mexican dishes on its menu: enchiladas, chimmichangas, burritos, tacos and fajitas. Daiquiri’s is usually busy with rowdy students thanks to its central Cathays location on Salisbury Road, so it’s probably not the place for a quiet, romantic meal. But if you can cope with a few groups of students, you’ll be rewarded with really good, authentic Mexican food in a warm, welcoming restaurant, with Mexican-themed drawings plastering the walls. As you’d expect, they also serve some mean cocktails, with jugs from £9.95 — and their speciality is(obviously) the daiquiri, based on rum, lime juice and sugar. As well as the classic version you can try other varieties such as strawberry, or cranberry & raspberry — and they also shake up a wide range of other types of cocktails, and the very drinkable Spanish punch sangria. All in all this is a good-time kind of a restaurant, and it thoroughly deserves its popularity. Just remember: ORDERFOODATTHEBAR, then take a seat!

Ah ha! I’d had the foresight to read the reviews of my fellow Unilocalers before heading there so knew I had to order my food at the bar. No red faces for me! It’s typically studentish with glaring kitch décor and raucous atmosphere and vibe. The good is great, the margaritas are tasty and lethal plus the service is really very good. It can get very busy so I’m glad that I booked in advance on the strength of the other reviews. I was not disappointed. Try it. I URGE you.

The student’s choice of Mexican eatery. This shouldn’t read as derogatory, Daiquiri’s is situated in the student area of Cathys and always seems to be quite busy. The décor is a little trashy but gives a good comfortable vibe of no real sense of seriousness within the joint. Like the reviewer above, I spent muchos time sitting looking for a waiting service that didn’t exist. Slightly red faced I eventually took my order to the bar and sat back down. After ordering a margarita I settled into my Enchiladas. The chilli was nice and spicy and tasted great with it’s partner in crime, the cheese. I really liked the staff here, very friendly and always game for a laugh. It all added to a lovely relaxed atmosphere and fairly inexpensive compared to other Tex-Mex restaurants in the area.

Our Daiquiri experience started with us deciding on the spur of the moment that we really fancied some mexican food(but were far too lazy to cook it). We called up Daiquiri’s where we were told that the restaurant was unfortunately fully booked. Disappointed, we prepared ourselves for the arduous task of cooking. Imagine our joy when we received a call from the manager telling us that there had been a cancellation! It is, then, very important to book in advance if you want to eat on the busier nights of the week. We were greeted by a friendly woman and shown to our seats. Studying the menus we noticed the brilliant range of dishes, varying in spice for those of us who can’t take the jalapenos. You have to go up to the bar to order, which we weren’t told, but discovered by watching other diners. You also place your drinks orders at the same time and carry those back to the table with you. The décor is colourful and friendly, with large cartoon like cactuses and peppers covering most of the walls. Not that there was much time to enjoy this because our food was very swiftly delivered to us. The food itself was delicious and piping hot. The portion sizes were also very generous — don’t feel you need a side order unless you are particularly ravenous! The restaurant is quite loud because it’s always filled with large groups of students but the atmosphere is brilliant. It is a little odd to return to the bar if you decide you want a pudding but what a minor irritation. All in all, it is one of the best places to go in cardiff. Not only is the food and service of a high standard, if you visit you’ll be supporting a wonderful family-run business.
