The Lady Luck Pub

Vegetarians can not count on much in the world of food. But there is one thing that herbivores can count on anywhere on Earth. That is that the local punk rock bar will always have something tasty on the menu that caters to them.
The Lady Luck is no exception to the rule. Behind its black clad barmaids and its punkity rockity memorabilia on the walls (kind of straight out of a Social Distortion song), it’s a disguised veggie foodie paradise during the day (with a lot of meat on the menu too). We left before it turned into its nighttime live music and more rowdy pub self, but even at around 5:00 p.m., they were welcoming to the traveler with a large backpack (in Cantebury, this should not be a surprise given its history) with a hearty vegetarian plowman’s lunch with local cheese (I think the cheddar and chutney combination will haunt my good dreams for a long time) and a strong British scrumpy cider for around twelve pounds total.
The vibe is definitely laid back and the clientele while we were there were not intimidating at all. The music selection on the jukebox is a bit more varied that a lot of other punk bars I’ve been to and we were serenaded by David Bowie (sad face) and Motorhead (double sad face) by a guy fresh out of a recording studio down the road. The music was turned up loud but there are no additional distractions (such as televisions) to be found.
While I wouldn’t exactly recommend this place to my parents, it’s definitely a chill place to eat a good meal and grab a good drink.

The Lady Luck is an alternative rock pub at the bottom of Canterbury highstreet. I visited on a Friday evening so my review will be based on my experiences of that night.
Appearance: From the outside you can tell the Lady Luck is an alternative pub as the front is painted black with nautical stars on the sign. To the left of the door there are several tables and chairs provided for those of us who still choose to smoke.
The atmosphere: When me and my friend first arrived it was just past 9pm on a Friday evening and apart from a few couples and regulars we were the only people there. The jukebox was pumping out rock music and the bar staff looked surprisingly like characters out of Pirates of the Carribean.
As the night progressed the pub began to fill up and at one point there was a queue to get in that went outside the door. The pub itself is not that big but the size of the bar really does need to be bigger to avoid queues. As you walk into the Lady Luck you are met by the bar, and then an open space that leads into two snug rooms, one of
which contains a pool table.
Staff: The bar staff were really friendly and had a decent chat with you as they served you your drinks. One suggested I have white sambuca whilst a regular suggested I go for black. A detailed analysis of the best type of sambuca followed, much to my amusement. There were 3 bar staff and one guy on the door who I am pretty sure was Captain Jack. He was very friendly and made sure that the louts who were walking past did not come in.
Drinks: I spent most of that night drinking Jack Daniels and coke. A single was £3.30 and a double was £4.85. A shot of sambuca was £2.20 and there jugs of cocktails are £8 which is very good value when split between two people. I can recommend the ‘Alligator’ cocktail which is in a big jug and is basically neon green. I cannot remember what was in it but it was very very refreshing.
Overall: I managed to spend 5 hours in the Lady Luck without getting bored, the people are friendly and the atmosphere is chilled out, apart from when a heavy metal tune comes on and people get a tad mental. The prices are not bad and are similar to any other pub in Canterbury. I think more people need to know about the Lady Luck pub as the clientele are not just rockers and you don’t have to be ‘alternative’ to visit. I am giving the Lady Luck 5 stars as it was an incredibly enjoyable evening and I will be going back very soon.
