The White Lion

This is a small pub, but a good one, and in a rather convenient location when you’re walking-​weary and returning towards the water. They have a nice lineup of Wickwar ales on tap, five of them when I was there (see photo). I did not try the food. Most impressive was a piece of literature that I found: Real Ale and Cider in the Known Universe — Volume 1: Avon. CAMRA culture goods from 1984. Packed with HHGG references, too! See pictures. (May your nose hair grow inwards if you steal it.) The staircase down to the toilets is the narrowest I have ever seen. See picture. In short: this place is well worth a visit.

It is an excellent
place for a relaxing meal in their garden. The place is very relaxing and cool.
Lots of delicious and healthy foods that surely fed your appetite. They also
have plenty of drinks and alcoholic drinks that really smoothing and has a
soothing effect when you drink.

Great pub, discovered by accident. Full of smelly old men, don’t expect a young crowd. Good local beers on tap at reasonable prices for the city centre. No pretensions, great little bar.

This is a gem of a Pub.
The atmosphere is always fantastic, and you can tell that the publican puts in alot of work as there is always something organised, some event going on, or new idea introduced.
I think i’ll be coming here over the next few weeks for all the 6 nations Rugby, as I now the atmosphere will be brilliant. You’d probably have to come early if you wanted a seat, but wheres the fun in sitting!
They have started serving Tapas all day which is something i’d like to try out soon, and with many traditional ales and ciders to wash it down with, who can resist?!

Nothing strikes fear into an appalling singer like me than the word ‘karaōke’. So when a colleague held his leaving do there, I knew I was going to need some liquid encouragement before I dared to sing a note. So just before we headed up the road to Kareoke-​Me! we went to The White Lion on Colston Avenue.
It may not look like much on the outside, but inside you’ll find a warm and welcoming bar which is bustling with atmosphere. It’s very small on the inside, so if you’re popping in — be prepared to stand. But there’s service with a smile and local pints served at a reasonable price and that’s good enough for me. Great for an after work drink or a lunchtime pint.

A very small, yet very charming little pub right in the heart of the city centre. The interior is incredibly small with literally only a handful of chairs and tables to sit at, it doesn’t take many people walking through the door to make this place feel very busy indeed.
During the summer months there is the option of the outside seating area which is covered by an awning. This can be a good place to sit and just watch the world go by (or people watch as I like to call it).
The beers and lagers on tap are fairly decent and it isn’t too expensive considering where it is. If you spot this little pub on your way home from work or on a Saturday afternoon then I highly recommend popping in for a swift half

It’s all gone a bit wrong.
Last time I popped in, the lights were off, there was a big sign in the window offering doubles for a pound, and music being blasted out.
It used to be a great place to meet friends and have a good chat in a proper pub. Looks like they may have changed their customer to the student market. Good luck to them, but I will not be going back. One friendly local informed me the old landlord had left, and was now running the three sugar loafs. Might try that one instead.

Proper pub. Home of Bristol’s smallest and best beer festival. Can only stay for a couple, because after 3 or more pints the vertical drop to the gents is lethal. Apparently there’s a spiral staircase, but I’ve always found falling to be quickest. Proper mardy landlord too — just the way they should be — apparently he’s a top bloke if you get to know him.

Great pub and i enjoyed going here last week. I went with my girlfriend and had great fun. Please go here i promise you will have a great time!

Yes, fine pub, good Wickwar ales, served perfectly, can’t fault it.

They don’t come much smaller then this, but the place just oozes charm. Offering one of the widest selection of wickwar beers I’ve ever found this is a great place to spend a lunch time or as many hours as you can spare. The inside is tiny with no more then a dozen seats within, it can be popular at may times during the day (deservedly so), which means getting a seat is never a certainty.
There is always the outside which generally has a good number of table and chairs under an awning which is perfect people watching territory with this being being right in the heart of the centre. When nature calls to get to the Gents you have to traverse a small spiral staircase which leads directly into the middle of the loo’s.
Other then the excellent selection of beers there is a fruit machine, TV, newspapers and a small selection of games and books, I have had many a good game of cribbage here. I think this may have changed hands recently but every time i’ve been, the bar staff have been a delight, with beer tasters and bar snacks on offer.
This is a wonderful little pub and confirms that size isn’t everything.

This tiny pub is hidden among the post-​war architecture of Colston Avenue, and is a real gem. It is the flagship pub for the equally tiny Wickwar Brewing Company in the Cotswolds, which produces some of the finest beers in the South West. The interior can be cramped at busy times (though in warmer weather there are always several tables outside under a big awning), but off-​peak it is a great place to rifle through the newspaper rack and sit with a pint and a big, fat sandwich. They also have a bar menu and a good selection of spirits. Prices are very reasonable.
The back wall is actually part of the old city wall, visible through a panel. Also of note, the men’s toilet is down a narrow spiral staircase that came from the Victorian gaol. Sit out front on a summer evening and imagine what the view looked like when the wide, busy street in front of you was the head of the quay, with tall ships moored against the embankment.
