Great friendly proper pub right by Stapleton Road train station with a good mix of locals and a first rate selection of beers and, importantly, proper cider at good prices. Pool tables, a juke box, nice decked beer garden for the warmer months. What more could you want?

The Sugar Loaf is a fairly large traditional English pub situated on St Marks Road in Easton. I prefer to go there after doing a big shop at The Bristol Sweet Mart, and have only ever called in once in the evening. It’s the only pub on St Marks Road, and I have often been known to stagger there with copious amounts of shopping. It serves my favourite pint which makes it irresistible. It’s become a bit of a ritual. I’ll drink a couple of pints of Old Speckled Hen at one of the picnic benches at the front, before weaving my way home on my overburdened bicycle. The staff are friendly enough and there’s a good selection of beer. Being a friendly local, I always find someone to chat to if the bar staff are too busy, but if not, they’re always happy to spend the time of day telling you the latest. It can get a little bit noisy at times, so I always sit outside if the weather is clement. Sadly, the building isn’t South facing, so the sun doesn’t last forever.

A really good all round pub. Now im the sort of person that always looks for a pool table in a pub, and I am genuinly dissapointed if they don’t have one so I was pleased to see one when I stepped inside The Sugar Loaf! and it was a good sized one as well, you kow the one that has enough space to play and is big enough to make it challenging. Also on Sunday 21st of Febuary for all you budding Jamie Oliver’s and Delia Smith’s(never thought i’d ever find a reason to write her name!) there is a cake making competition at 4pm… The Sugar Loaf ‘Cake Off!’. So if you’ve had a manic friday, an inebriated Saturday, here’s a ‘sweet Sunday’ for you to enjoy, heck all this excitment is making me change my start rating from 3 to 4! The Sugar Loaf also has a really good selection of traditional ales which I can hartily recommend… Enjoy!

Ree-laaax down Easton way at the trad-pub-slash-cider drinker’s-dream that is the ‘Loaf. A fine selection of alcoholic apple beverages, including the infamous Black Rat cider(real rodents not included). Staff serve with smiley chat, there’s a jukebox packing ‘60s rock and reggae classics, and a huge pool table for those who just can’t sit still with a pint. The walled garden out back is an essential for early autumn sunsets. Why not pop into the Thali for a curry on the way home?
