The Failand Inn is a typical country pub, with dark old oak beams, ancient horse brasses and photographs on the walls and a solid if unimaginative menu. The pub is hard up against the main road, but there is a sizable and very pleasant garden at the back which is a nice place to have a drink on a warm evening(though you can still hear the traffic). The bar offers a mediocre selection of local and international beers, but the prices are reasonable, and you usually don’t have to wait to be served like you do in the busy city pubs. The food takes a while, but it is cooked fresh to order, and is actually very nice if you don’t want haute cuisine, but do want something solid to fill a gaping hole of hunger. The steaks are usually very good, and the chips are good old chunky ones, as they should be in a pub.

Out in the darkest depths of Lower Failand, I expected to unearth standard pub grub and that’s just what I found. Pork chops smothered in cheddar and tomato, tasty but without kick(or oink!). Chips of the thick ‘n’ stodgy variety, but lacking crunch. Theakston’s ale warm and flat(as it should be) and grumbling guys propping up the bar. Indoors — I warmed to theplush carpets and comfy chairs, out the back you can still hear the thunder of traffic in the sizeable country garden. I would say its great for a bite if you’re on your way home, but not worth a trip all the way out of the city.

I have to say this place has never appealed to me. Situated on the main stretch of an extremly busy road, why someone would want to go there and eat and sit outside is beyond me. However yes, I have eaten there. just the once and this was only beacuse the pub we had wanted to go to was chocker so we stopped off here. It was OK. its a pub! It was a shame because it was a lovely day but as I said, didn’t really fancy sitting outside on such a busy road so we sat indoors. I can’t complain that the food was bad though. it was pub food and nothing more than what you would expect from food grub! However, I know people who love it here so I would say, try it if your in the area!

I always remember having a fairly average meal at the Failand Inn with my family, when afterwards we decided to have a dessert. My mum chose the Lemon Merengue, and I remember her taking the first bite when I realised to everyones horror that the base was covered in mould. I can’t say my mum was too impressed, and we immediately notified the staff who said that its definitely gone off. Clearly an expert in that field then. Instead of offering us anything for free, she said that my mum could choose another dessert. Upon pointing out that she’d served mum a dessert covered mould, she said she was very busy and it wasn’t her problem. Subsequently, her real problem was four customers leaving without paying due to the poor customer service and absence of any shred of an apology for what happened.
