Possibly had the worst meal of my life here. Should have guessed the price tag of £4.99 would mean it tasted like a rotten bollock.

I soooo miss this place. I left Bristol in 2007 to go travelling around the world, and now in Leeds. I loved this place, excellent bar staff, great food, plenty of screens for the sport and cheap drinks.

The title boldly emblazoned across the front of the pub is a classic example of an apostrophe catastrophe and never fails to irk me when I walk past. Yes I am a giant pedant but I don’t see the point of spending all that money on a sign if you are going to get it wrong. This pub is a great boozer in the traditional sense of the word– with plenty of old soaks enjoying their daytime tipple but lots of sports lovers enjoying football and students enjoying all the bar has to offer. It’s pretty roomy inside and they do good standard pub fare with offers that make it really cheap. However, I do find it a bit lacking in the character that many of the other pubs on Gloucester Road have which means I see as an average sort of place rather than a must-visit.

The Bishop is a nice little pub located just by the Arches on Gloucester road with a great friendly atmosphere — somewhere you can enjoy a few chilled out drinks with friends! This pub is very popular with the locals and all throughout the day they have customers, however I would add that its not really a family pub and perhaps not a great place to take the kids as its much more geared towards an over 18 audience. And as with any good pub, the nights when football matches on are the most buzzing — but you’d want to get down early to get a seat to watch the game! In terms of prices, drinks are fairly average — and they also offer student discount which knocks the price down a bit further! The Bishop has a great cheap food menu too, they offer a deal where you can buy two meals for around £8, making it an affordable place to spend an evening out with friends.

Previously a student hang-out, the Bishop’s Tavern was renovated in 2008 to become The Bishops. With a classier, more civilised feel in mind, this large pub has remained my local favourite. The ale and spirits are extremely cheap, especially for Gloucester Road’s competitive prices and this attracts all members of the public– those who want a quiet drink, to the alcohol-fuelled crowds on a Saturday afternoon. Relatively quiet during the day, after 9 o clock the pub becomes a haven for pre-drinkers within walking distance and the mood quickly changes from family-friendly to clubber-central. The music is good fun and the staff always have a smile on their face or itchy feet as they serve food and drinks. The interior is well-thought out for cosy couples or larger swarms of people because there are neat alcoves for those desiring a more peaceful time and a separate room of large tables with a huge television for those whose only concern is how the game is going. The It-box is a staple at any pub and The Bishops have two — a double bonus! Any more trivia-lovers will really enjoy their Sunday night pub quiz which is always teaming with people, with original questions and a fabulous prize that rolls over each week.

The Bishops is located on the lower end of Gloucester Road. By day it is full of footie fans and local old men, by night its students en route to clubbing. If the football isn’t on, it makes a pleasant spot to do my Unilocaling with a cup of coffee and wireless. The interior is well designed and has a cosy, yet modern feel to it. Staff were efficient and chatty without being annoying which is always a positive. I have only visited The Bishops once at night time and this was at around 6ish for a pub dinner. The food was cheap and cheerful and not too bad actually. It did, however, get very busy just as we were finishing so I can imagine it’s a lively place once the clubbers emerge.

This is a fairly run of the mil type of place, doing nothing particularly well and nothing particularly bad either. The drinks on offer are what you would expect to find in most average pubs and bars, as is the food. I wouldn’t really recommend going her for something to eat, but if you happened to be in here I wouldn’t say don’t order anything from the menu, as it’s alright I suppose. It attracts a largish crowd when there is a football match on, but it’s screen location is a bit rubbish and unless you get there early you won’t be able to see much of anything. If you want to watch football in the pub, go some place like Roo Bar is my advice.

I came here in the daytime in search of wireless internet and a good cup of coffee. The Bishops is a large pub, in a similar league to wetherpoons or a scream bar, but with a slightly classier décor. I was a little annoyed to find that all the plugs appeared to be different to stardard UK electrical plugs, meaning that I couln’t power my laptop, but was pleasantly surprised to find two fully functioning PCs, on which I had a bit of a time limit. I managed to do what I wanted and enjoyed the accompanying coffee. The menu also displayed cheap and cheerful food and drinks. Yay! I’m a fan.

Sitting on Gloucester Road down by the Arches, this large pub(which used to be the Hogshead) is somewhat akin to a slightly upmarket Wetherspoon’s — though that’s not necessarily a great recommendation! It’s got relatively bargainous booze and even cheaper food, though the way that it varies from a ‘spoons is that they have music in the evenings(of the loud and cheesey variety) and Sky Sports. It gets rammed during big games if you like that kind of thing, so you’ll need to get here early if you want to claim a seat, let alone one in front of the big screen which is peculiarly positioned as not to be accesible to the majorty of the pub.

On the route of many a student night into town, the Bishops, being large and not too expensive, is well suited as a hopping point before a night of clubbing. It’s very much a friday night pub in my opinion, but fortunatly this doesn’t necessarily mean a scrum at the bar, with a slightly more civilised crowd than you’ll get at similar sized places on waterfont, for instance. The music may well be pounding though, and plenty of people will be there with the intention of having more than a couple of drinks. There’s the Prince of Wales over the road if you want somewhere that isn’t quite so loud, so I don’t think I should complain about it. Plus, the Bishops is mercifully cheap compared to some of the places close by.

Really nice atmosphere, drinks resonably priced with student offers avaiable. Staff are friendly too. Foodwise not too sure, it arrived quickly piping hot and looked yummy but it just tasted like microwaved dinners. Quite disapointed to be honest. Maybe I would have been better with a burger judging by the other comments!

This place seems to have changed from what it was just a couple of years ago. These days it comes across as a little quieter. It’s a good place to go though. I’ve popped in on a Sunday lunchtime with my girlfriend for a quick drink. On that occasion we sat in the little snug room around the corner of the bar and up some steps. Cosy little place to sit and chat. I’ve also been in for lunch a couple of times with my folks on an afternoon. When I’ve done that the food has been excellent and the staff very friendly. During the week there’s a 2 for £8 offer on certain meals which is good value for money. Been in with mates before embarking on a pub crawl on Glos Rd too. Prices are relatively cheap compared to a lot of places in Bristol and I’ve never had a bad time there. For the burger lovers there’s a whole menu dedicated to meat in a bun. Fantastic!

Due to the big crowds, this is a good place to soak up some atmosphere when watching a sports game. However, there is never enough space for the seats, and the biggest screen is positioned so that only about fifteen people can watch it, out of about a hundred and twenty that might be in the pub. Thankfully, there are other screens if you happen to miss the kick off. Otherwise, this pub has a large selection of wine, beer, spirits and food. I can heartily recommend the hearty roast sunday lunch, from the bottom of my heart. It costs either about £7, or £9 if you want to «Go Large», but presuming you’re not as big as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, you will not need to go for the more expensive option.

I used to live within a stones throw from the bishop tavern so was a regular in their. IT gets busy on big sporting nights with rather awkward screen positioning sometimes making it difficult to enjoy a comfortable watch. However the service is friendly and its a comfortable place to enjoy a few drinks. There is also a pool table and a couple of IT boxes, which can make for a nice change from your best friend going on about his girlfriend trouble.

This lively and busy pub makes for a good place to watch live sport and enjoy a sunday lunch. An extensive menu and comfortable surroundings make for a good combination. Student discounts, drinks offers and a good location help make this pub a popular haunt for many.
